I have a $300-400 budget for a new mobo and cpu.

I currently have

Barton 2500+ @ 3200+
Abit NF7-S
X800XT PE
2x 512MB Kingston HyperX
550W Enermax

Since I unexpectantly got the x800 for xmas, I decided I might as well upgrade my mobo/cpu to match. I've been kinda out of the loop, I'm assuming I can keep my current memory? Currently running it dual channel and it's fine memory. I am thinking about getting a 939 setup but not really familar with the different mobos/which CPUs are good overclockers. I plan to overclock for sure. I trust that even without much of an overclock the jump would be worth it?

lets see...3500+ with a K8N Neo2 Platinum sound good?

However...your current setup can last a bit longer..if you wait maybe the price of the nforce 4 boards will come down and then you can get one of those.
 
Definatly go for an A64. What ever board you want is pretty good. Don't go with a a64-FX . They are way to expensive, and from what I have heard not all that special. Get a Socket 939.
 
I've got a similar setup, and am currently waiting to see where SLI technology goes. I firsthand how hard it is to wait, but right now waiting for the bleeding-edge technology to mature is probably a wise decision. Prices will be lower in a few months, and assuming you have a tax return coming, your budget may be subject to change as well. :)

Is the 3200+ generally a good overclocker?

they're all kinda a hit and run thing. the newer ones oc much better than the old ones, so you should be set to go.
and for that mobo.. it's not bad, a lot of people around here have it, but i'm not gonna recommend it if you really want to overclock.
 
I'm suprised to see an ABIT mobo not being the mobo for overclocking :eek:
 
i love my 3400+ new castle (about $215) and my dfi lanparty UT (about $106)

both of those prices are from newegg when i ordered my stuff like 2 weeks ago. i would go with that combo
 
I take it the 90nm CPUs overclock better? Is it worth it to get a 90nm 3200+ rather than a faster .13 micron?

I am looking at the Abit AV8 and the Asus A8V(VIA chipset boards :eek: )

It's probably hard to go wrong but I haven't been following the Athlon64 scene so I'd appreciate any advice.
 
as a general rule of thumb, the 90nm cores are good for an extra 200mhz or so over the 130nm
and don't get a board based on the via chipset if you're gonna overclock. i'll recommend the msi k8n neo2. a lot of people have it. some hate it, more love it. ;)
 
i'm not sure, but if they are, they're definitly not selling boards with faulty caps anymore (and i think the story on that was that whichever company made them sent out a bad batch, so it's not entirely the mobo maker's fault)
 
I see, I do trust the nforce chipsets more than via ones but I have always thought of MSI as being a shady company =/

I have some time to get this all worked out anywho.
 
zipzoomfly has the retail 3500+ newcastle bundled with the MSI board for $405... Would be like $460 to buy the MSI board + a winchester 3500+... Thinking of spending just a little more now.
 
I bought a Epox 9NDA3J and a Silent boost from mwave for 130 shipped 2 day. I also got a Winnie 3000+ for 120 shipped on the forsale forums.

If you hang out in the for sale forums here on [H] you will find some good deals on stuff.
 
I would also recommend the epox board, i hope the winnie you got isn't older then week 40, cuz it probably wouldv've been worth the extra $30 to get a newer core. Oh and the newer core 3000+ 939 usually do at least 2.5 ghz most get 2.6 ghz+, so I wouldnt worry about buying a faster processor unless you really despise running your ram async
