3D glasses

well, i remember that old game magic carper used to have a 3d mode, and it came with a pair fo 3d glasses, other than that i know you can buy special 3d glasses that can work with lots of games, i beleive they ahve special software, but natively, magic carpet is the only one i know off.

I believe old duke3d supported them too. Is there any way I can use 3d glasses of some sort with games like Unreal, Half-life, Doom 3, far cry ?

Not that I know of.. the game has to support it, to my knowledge.

You mean something like eDimensional's 3D glasses??? I'm gonna get one...gonna be awesome now that they support ATI cards!!!

there have been patches for some games to support them, like quake 2....

I have a pair of 3d glasses that came with my GeForce4 4400... I never used them... think they will work with my 9800Pro? Are they the same as eDimensional? Will they work with the newest NVidia cards?

Get the 3d shutter glasses (from just about any maker), all nvidia cards support em and in theory so do all D3D and OpenGL games.

It requires a seperate driver download from nvidia (in addition to normal drivers) and adds a location in the driver for tweaking them I have the eDimensional ones and honestly haven't messed with them much. Its nice because it actually will have a list of games in the driver that are supported (BF, UT2004 are in the list and I think even FarCry). Whether or not they are in the list, "most" games will work I think. Heh, I think I'll drag them out for Doom3 since I haven't gone far yet...

I don't know what Metallica_Band is talking about. eDimensional's 3D glasses do not have good drivers for ATI cards. Only NVidia. With an ATI card, they barely work, if at all.

3d glasses are really good with NVidia cards but suck on ATI hardware. Nvidia has 3d glasses support in their drivers, so all 3d shutter glasses should work fine on NVidia cards.

The way the shutter glasses work is that frames are displayed alternately for each eye and the glasses block out the image for the opposite eye. Each eye only sees half of the total frames rendered. You also have to turn V-Sync on, or it'll look fscked up. The best frame rate per eye that you'd be able to get is 1/2 the refresh rate of the monitor being used, no matter how powerful the graphics card(s) being used or the simplicity of what is being rendered.

Does anybody here use 3D glasses? What games do you know that support them?

thanks.

If you've got an nVidia card, you can pretty much run any 3D game on it :)

The game i recommend is Painkiller. Lot's of in-your-face (And i mean this literally) explosions, gibs flying everywhere. Try playing this game on a large flatscreen and you'll reflexively duck after blowing up those skeletons at the trainstation ^________^

Depending on the setting, games can either be in 3D inside the monitor (like a diorama) or actually pop half a foot out of the monitor. Painkiller is the latter, believe me, it's noticeable, especially in the village with the zombies tossing pieces of themselves at you :D

It's like this game was made specifically for 3D Glasses!

BTW, nVidia stereo drivers also have a built in screen capture utility so you can 'properly' capture those 3D images and view them later. Nice. ;)

WOW!!! I must play Painkiller again with the glasses...that sounds totally awesome...I just gotta get my hard drive to working correctly again...having probs...:(

A bit more info.

3D glasses work by moving the camera a few inches to the left and right to simulate your eyes. This really doesn't have any additional overhead since the camera would just as happily move anywhere else in the room anyway, it's just keeping itself in one place for the players convenience :p The card is still rendering at 60fps with or without the glasses.

The driver creates two sets of buffers in the video card, one for each eye, and times it so that each refresh coincides with each flip of the video buffer. This important coz there is *NO* way for the glasses to know which frame goes to which eye, all the glasses does is alternately cover one eye when it receives a signal from the V-signal pin, it doesn't care what's actually showing up on your screen. Because of this, when you first start up the glasses, theres a 50% chance the frame's will show up in the wrong eye, all 3Dglasses i know has a switch to correct this tho.

I dunno why ATI wouldn't support it. A lot of people i know with ATI's are complaining about it :(

Any kind of cheat also ruins the 3D effect, any kind of pre or post processing, like the Bloom effect in prince of persia or 3DMark2003 would be way off since they're done in 2D without any regard for actual depth. Pixel Shader 2.0 based waves also seem to be affected like water effects and bullet waves. Creating the extra buffer is also a bit of a problem, you're effectively doubling the buffer memory needed, which is *pretty* big. 1024(H) x 768(V) x 3(RGB) x 2(FlipBuffer) x 2 (Stereo) = Over 9 Megs (OUCH!)

Worst game to use it on is farcry, most of the foliage there aren't 3D, it looks weird having the grasses look identical in each eye, while the rest of the world is in perspective. :(

I always thought of buying some of those eDimensional glasses. However, I'm guessing they still don't support LCDs due to the way the tech works? I enjoy my LCD screens too much too give them up. ;(

someone post some 3d screenshots of painkiller...sounds cool. And what is the best 3d glasses to get ?

For those who don't have 3D glasses, have no fear! Remember those goofy red/blue glasses you got after watching SpyKids3D? nVidia supports those too! Just install the stereo drivers, switch it from Stereo to Anaglyph mode, and presto, 3D! Just keep a couple of bottles of aspirins handy, some people tend to get sick after a while. This is also a good alternative for those with LCD screens.

Here's a few pics. Rename them *.JPG to *.JPS , If you've got Stereo Drivers installed, the nVidia utility should recognize them and show them in 3D automatically, i highly recommend going to Options to properly set the resolution, and then view all the pics in a slideshow. No problem if you don't have shutterglasses, remember that these also work with the red/blue ones, not as pretty (Black and White kinda ruins the lighting) but they work ^_^

Try placing your finger on parts of the pic, parts of the scene are sticking out of your monitor!

PainKiller

Stairs, nice perspective
Zombie jumping out of the ground
Another shot of the trainstation
An excellent demonstration of physics
Wha? No Gibs? :(
Pic of what *isn't* on the guys back. The hole is even more apparent in 3D.
Need a shower?
Whoops, slipped
Zombies warping in the moonlight

This is a good one. Try placing your hand on where you think the torch should be ;)

Doom3 in 3D! Only in 800x600 tho :p

Just after you get off the shuttle
That guy in the kitchen
Marine up close
Sarge
Swann and his bodyguard
The desk guy
Betruger
Betruger, his eyes are really far back into his skull. I wonder if i look like that.
Betruger, if he suddenly looks at me, i'll get a heartattack :p

As i suspected, this game doesn't translate well into 3D, a lot of things go wrong in the graphics. Even if the graphics were perfect, 'ghosting' is still pretty bad. I do *NOT* recommend playing Doom3 in stereo :(

BTW, I'm using an fx5900xt, 61.77 video drivers, and 61.76 stereo drivers. Stereo support goes all the way back to TNT2, anybody with an nVidia card can see these.

EDIT: Don't worry if you've only got red/blue glasses, the stereo drivers will automatically convert them to red/blue when you set the drivers to anaglyph mode.

EDIT2: Forgot to add. I'm using Dr.3D IT-338 goggles. Got them surplus for 8 bucks :D

I have inside info that eDimensional are currently working on one that will work with LCD's...

Any inside info on possible better ATI support in the future? I know their official line seems to be that they are always "almost done" some new ATI drivers but they never seem to come. I am getting closer and closer to putting these glasses up on ebay before the price drops again. (I bought mine for 100 bucks a few years back)
