Any aftermarket fans for the 360 power supply? Mine makes a TON of noise and after taking it apart and getting to the fan I see that it is not just a standard computer fan. Does anyone make anything different?

My power supply is completely quiet. The power supply is the big ass brick, its not built into the system. I think you must be talking about the drive as mine is also pretty loud.

nope.. the power supply, its a whine thats pretty loud. Its one of those sounds thats VERY hard to drown out. Reason I'm sure its that is that when I took the fan out, I blew it to spin it around and even just doing that produced the same noise (although quieter)
It needs replacing I just don't know what I can get in there yet

The drive noise that you are talking about it pretty loud, and I do hear that but this sound drowns that sound out believe it or not. I've put up with it for long enough, I bought the hddvd drive and it just sucks listening to that PS noise, which is loud enough to hear even with the 5.1 turned up.

Prolly, I didn't try to warrenty it or anything.. def don't want to shell out 100 for it, the thing works fine, just loud

The external power brick AKA the power supply doesnt have a fan though. Its solidly built and I dont even think you can take it apart. Im confused on what compenent you are talking about.

Yeah, for safety/liability reason, almost all external power related things are one piece molded shut, at the most you can detach both cables from it.

Whining sounds like dying capacitors inside.

actually thats where your wrong. i just baught a new 360 cause my launch day sexbox died and this one has a fan in the power supply. i also had the high pitched noise coming from the power supply. took it apart and the fan was making the noise. I returned it to EBGames for a new system and this one also has a fan but it is really quiet.

If I had a way to post pictures of the block I would, It comes apart, and def not molded together. Theres def a fan in it just like a normal power supply on a computer which is what it is.

It unscrews just like any other power supply I've messed with, if you take the rubber feet out (which are glued in and you have to be careful pulling them out) those are where the screws are.. 4 feet = 4 screws, take those out, 2 screws inside to pull the heat sink off, then in the top part you take the heat sink/shields out and the little fan is in there.

No one here has seen any articles or has pulled one apart already?

for those of you that think I'm stupid....

hopefully that link works, THAT is what i took apart the power supply, yes it comes apart, and yes theres a fan in there to cool the caps, along with plenty of termal grease.

Maybe I need to do a write up on modding the thing if I can figure out what will work! I'll have to look around more to see if anyone has done anything to it. I've seen a link somewhere of someone that did a mod to a computer power supply to make it work with the 360

Launch day console here, and my power brick has a fan in it. The exhaust holes are right next to the light. But it's really quiet for me, pretty much silent.

I think thats why its hard to find any info on the subject... I found a couple links, I'll have to take a look at it some more tomorrow to see what I can do about it.

Here are some links to interesting reads on the power supply, there are some pictures in them if you want to see whats inside. (even the fan)

I'll post up if I figure out how to do another fan in there or if i find another link on it. Surely there has to be more of us out here with a noisey fan! ;)

Wow, I had no idea there was a fan in those things. If I were you I'd call them up, and see if they can just send you a new power-supply. My guess is they won't, but it doesn't hurt to at least try.
