2010 MacBook pro issues?

So a local guy on craigslist is selling a 2010 Macbook Pro (15") model for $250.00. Apparently the hard drive broke on the thing, he brought it to a geeksquad location where they confirmed the hard drive was bad.

I'm guessing they gave him some insane quote to 'fix' it, so he just went out and bought a MacPro desktop and is selling the MacBook.

So I guess my question is, providing it's a legit ad, are these prone to any other issues? $250.00 is a crazy good deal if it only needs a drive... but I also don't want to buy it and find out that I got burned because it needed a new logic board or something else expensive to replace.
 
I think for $250 as long as the screen and keyboard is good you aren't going to be out much money if you need a logic board.

Funny thing though, last I searched around considering something like this I found a LOT of MBP with liquid damage to the mainboard. I thought for sure there would be plenty of smashed LCD models to pair together with a liquid damaged unit but surprisingly not.

So IMO if you can boot it up and get the screen on and at least display boot disk selection you might consider taking it. Maybe you could take another mac and mess around with target disk to try it out. Maybe.
 
$250, the guy is stupid or a scammer. You can probably figure out which before you give him your money.
 
There's at least a slight chance that this is a stolen product, IMO. The story sounds a little too unbelievable.
 
If it sounds too good to be true...

The deal sounds off to me. Could be a bad logic board, some sort of liquid damage, or stolen. I just don't see a MBP with merely a bad drive going for that low.
 
To answer your question Steve, yes the 2010 models had nvidia chip problems. A quick google search will show you what I'm talking about. I pretty much avoid 2010 models like the plague.
 
Should link your source. The 2007-early 2008 MBPs were widely known to have faulty GPUs however subsequent MBPs has not had higher than normal failure rates.
 
$250 is a great deal, Buy it and have fun. If not buy it and resell it on flebay, Parts MBP's are going for 400-500 on average.

Typing on a 2010 model its not a bad machine but it has always been quirky. But given the price I would risk it. Mine has never done anything to make it unusable.
 
well seller never got back to me. Either someone else snatched it up or fake/bs listing
