My setup:
Wireless network, PC in my office, Macbook and laptop in living room connected via wi-fi, NAS in my office with 2 external HDD's plugged into it via USB.

For the last year, I've been able to access the files on the NAS and external HDD's via all computers (including my Macbook) on my network. I was using them for storing all my photos, videos, etc (I'm a photographer and have over 27000 photos on the hard drives). Recently I noticed that I couldn't access either of the external HDD's through my Macbook.. so I went and power-cycled them, still couldn't access them. I've also tried plugging them in to the back of my PC directly via USB, but neither of them are recognized. It's weird, because when I plug one of them into the PC, I get the little notification bubble down at the bottom right corner of the screen saying something like "USB Mass storage device found", then it says the name of it "Maxtor Onetouch 200 is available" (or something like that).. but when I go to Windows Explorer to look at the drives available, it's not there. The other HDD doesn't even seem to get acknowledged when I plug it in.

We had a storm here a couple weeks ago, but the power in my house didn't go out (I don't think).. but I guess it's very possible that there may have been some kind of power surge.

I'm guessing I could take the HDD out of the external enclosure and plug it into the IDE connection inside the PC, but I'm wondering if anyone else has any other suggestions?

Thanks!
Mark

I had a bunch of stuff that got blown up by a nearbye lightning strike a couple of years ago. It's very possible that both drives could have been torched. My incident seemed to travel through the network wireing as it took out my cable modem, a wireless router and a NIC or two on my computers. It also took out the Multi switch on my DTV antennae. There were a couple of other items that I forget about.

Anyway, I would plug the drives directly into a MOBO and see if they work. It's possible that the external enclosure is bad.

Good luck

Thanks.. yeah, I'll give that a whirl tonight... <sigh> .. man, I hope the data is recoverable. Otherwise I'm gonna have to send the HDD's out to some data recovery service or something. I cannot imagine losing all those photos.

Yea, you gotta remember to unplug them and put them in a safe place after making a backup. I pull my external drive out of the cabinet once or twice a month to bakup my Nas box with all my music and photos on. The only thing I don't back up is the Pr0n as there is too much, and I can just DL new stuff if it all went bye bye.

If the Bios does not see the drives when you plug them in they are toast and will require pro intervention. Pricey to say the least.

symptoms aren't looking good. I plugged each of the HDD's into my mobo (one at a time) as a slave drive... booted up... went to "My Computer" and it wasn't there. went to "device manager" and "disk drives" and it showed the name of the drive, and said it was operating normally ???? but it was nowhere to be found... any more suggestions before sending them out to a data recovery service and blowing a few hundred bucks HOPING they can recover my data??

Assuming you are on XP, have you tried viewing them under Disk Management (local)?

Contol Panel, Adminstrative tools, Computer mangement, Storage.

That may show the drives and let you work with them.
