Will I lose performance since I am using 5400RPM drives? Or should I not notice the difference that much? (Quite frankly, my MacBook boots pretty fast for a 5400RPM)
 
You'll notice. 2.5" drives (especially 5400rpm) are quite a bit slower than current desktop drives.
 
difference from what? a 10 year old 4200 RPM desktop drive or a velociraptor?
 
They're definitely not faster than other 3.5"* drives, honestly the only well to know is if you try it for yourself
 
My 60GB 5400rpm ide laptop drive i get about 30MB/s, its alot slower then my other drives. It is far to slow for some things. But ill probably upgrade this to a newer faster drive and put this in my xbox or in my server for the os drive.
 
There are lots of reasons to use a 2.5" in a regular tower. Heat output, vibrations, and space constrains to name a few.
