Hey just got a 9700 pro 256 meg ram variety for dirt cheap.
i've checked it out with riva tuner and it seems the core speed is 325 mhz which is fine but my memory speed is effectively only 405 (thats 202.5 doubled)

but the real problem is that i tohught radeon 9700's should be 256 bit memory bus by default. is there a way to fix this?

well i've researched and it seems the I (as opposed to L) configuration has a crippled bus speed...

The 9700 Pro was a 256 bit bus card. The 9500 Pro was a 128 bit. The early 9500 cards could be hacked to use 256 bit but once people started doing it ATi caught on and a new PCB was designed with ONLY 128 bit bus circuitry.

Maybe you have a bastardized card that doesnt follow the specs?

so perhaps you are thinking i have a 9500 derivative that has been flashed to think its a 9700 ?
 
No 256MB 9500s, so that's not it. Wait, there weren't any 256MB 9700s either!

You either have a 9800, which would be something like the Sapphire 9800 Atlantis Edition, or some weird flavor of FireGL. I highly doubt the latter is right, since you'd know the difference between the two cards. Besides the physical differences, the 256MB FireGL of that timeframe was the X1-256 (IIRC), which was based on the 9700 anyway- not the 9500, which sold as the Z1 I believe.
 
sounds like a 9600 non-pro to me, ram config and 128-bit memory bus are right on, and so are the clockspeeds.....
 
Sorry i don't have a video camera but from what i notice it seems to look exactly like a 9700 pro except for the memory configuration. I wonder if there was a benchmark that could tests the GPU independently of CPU power so i can guage the performance of the chip. From what i gather its an underclocked 128 mbit card with a 9700 VPU...
do 9600 series share the same VPU as the 9500 series. I gather the 9500 series was te 9700 vpu with disabled pipelines.
i got all 8 on mine.....
 
as that would only have 4 pipes, the 9700 is an R300 GPU, the 9600 is a RV350 GPU, so no, they are not the same chip.... i'm thinking that maybe some company with a surplus of R300 GPUs designed some kind on "9700SE" type board, or it's an 8-pipe 9500 with the BIOS flashed to a 9700 and downclocked on the memory.....
 
Does it get all of its power from the AGP slot, or do you have to plug in an additional Molex or floppy connector for it to work?

Also, describe the heatsink: is it trapezoidal or more like a rectangle, perhaps with corners cut off? Black or silver, fan or no fan? Does this give you an idea what sort of stuff I mean? Each generation within the Radeon 9x00 series had its own distinctive heatsink design, so it'll give us an idea how old the chip/board is.
