My current setup is
A642800
Geforce 2
Biostar shittastick NF3 mobo.
SB Audigy 2 Platinum ZS
512 MB Ram

I'm going for a setup that can handle: Non-linear editing, 3d applications, 2d applications (PS!), and Adobe After Effects...a lot better than what it's doing right now. (poop)

With all of the recent price cuts by AMD, I'm thinking of going with an AMD based system even though the newest Duo's by Intel, are technically faster.

Here's what I'm looking at:
Mobo: ASUS M2N32-SLI Deluxe Wireless Ed NF590 SLI MCP ATX AMD = $186.99
Processor: A64 X2 5600+ Windsor 2.8GHz 2 x 1MB L2 Cache CPU = $329
Video Card: EVGA GeForce 8800GTS 320MB 320-bit GDDR3 PCI-Ex16 HDCP = $304.99
RAM: CORSAIR ValueSelect 2GB (2 x 1GB) DDR2 = $134.99
Hard Drive: Seagate Barracuda 250GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s = $86.99

Maybe I should cut the HD, and add another 2 more GB of RAM? Need that renderability/RAM preview! Wacom tablet's probly gonna get thrown in there after the fact, but

How's this setup look? Is there a better performance/price configuration?

If you don't play games, save your money on the video card, it does no good in after effects and photoshop and doesn't help much in most 3d apps either. Instead of cutting the hard drive, I would actually suggest buying a second one for a scratch disk. Photoshop and after effects love having a secondary scratch disk. You could also probably save money on the mobo since you don't need SLI. With all the money you save on the mbo and vidcard, you can buy a second hard disk and get 2 more GBs of RAM.

AMD is cutting prices April the 9th on the high end stuff. You'll be able to get a 6000+ for ~250USD

I would wait just a bit.

Yeah I saw the article and I'll probably wait. Thanks for the feedback guys, you're right. I play games but I don't need 1920x++++ resolutions at full graphics so...Non SLI, I'll check around.

The Nvidia 8600 cards should be hitting the shelves soon. Looks like they'll be under $200 for starters.

Intel is cutting prices as well. E6600 with the 4mb cache for 200 bucks. I'd wait for that and the new 8XXX series cards.

I'm a big amd fan but I see no reason to go with them right now.

I agree.

I didn't hear Intel was cutting prices. Hmmm, back to Newegg...Yeah, definitely spring for the mid/low end 8000 series. Wee!
