10K Drive, or SSD?

I've heard a lot of conflicting opinions about SSD drives from coworkers, so I want to check in with the community to learn your opinions.

Are SSD drives as reliable and fast as their plattered counterparts? Are there serious drawbacks?

I'm building a new PC for my wife, and as her OS drive, I'm deciding between 10K raptor drive and an SSD.

The size isn't a big deal, we'll be installing steam on a larger, slower drive anyway.
 
I had a 10k Raptor and replaced it with an SSD.

So mark one vote down for the SSD.

(but not from OCZ. I own 2 and had to RMA both)

If you are using it in a desktop/home environment, a consumer SSD all the way. If you are in an enterprise environment with a write-heavy workflow, an SLC SSD would be my primary choice or 15K SAS depending on $$$$ and storage needs.
 
Who is telling you that SSDs are not good? Mark them down as an idiot.

Depends on the user's needs.
For storage price per GB, no, they aren't that good.

For high-performance OS and data cache drives, they are awesome.
 
10K disk are prefered when IOPS is secondary and in some RAID setups. Otherwise SSD are a must!

But remember: disks AND SSD's can fail.

My gf uses a ssd and I use a RAID 1. Guess what... I am jealous of her setup... ;)

Well yeah Raid 1 is mirroring. You want speed use Raid 0 ;)

FYI I have 2 gaming systems each with SSD's in Raid 0.

Mushkin SSDs in Raid 0 give me 1GB speeds
OCZ SSDs in Raid 0 are slightly faster on smaller files but slower on larger files.

You can always RAID1 some SSDs.
Also, if you are doing mission-critical tasks on your system, I personally would much rather have RAID1 HDDs than a single SSD.

If you don't need redundancy though, then why aren't you using RAID0? :confused:
 
Raid 1 can really give you some awesome read performance (on par with Raid 0, right?). Either way, with my own setup I enjoy Raid 1 for storage and SSD for everything else. But even for storage, things are pretty perky transfer-rate-wise for me.

Only FakeRAID, hardware RAID, and one of the GMirror options allow for a read-speed bonus, just fyi.
 
Definitely go with the SSD. A 256 GB would even fit quite a few games on there. 128 GB is enough if you manage space wisely. It's all I have right now and I can keep the games I'm actively playing on it although I don't have a bloated office suite installed on that box.
