101 Networking question...

I have a gigabit switch on my internal network and sometimes I bring a laptop from work, which uses VPN to connect to work. However I see my VPN connection dropping from time time, so I'm wondering if my setup is correct...

NOW:

cable modem --> router (WRT54GL w/Tomato) --> Dlink gigabit Switch --> Main PC / Wii / Media Streamer / HTPC / laptop from work

should I change this to?:

cable modem --> router --> laptop from work (VPN)
...................................--> switch --> Main PC / Wii / Media Streamer / HTPC


Please advise.

you mean connecting your laptop directly to the router instead of through the switch?

will make 0 bit of difference... what type of VPN do you use to connect to work?

laptop uses Contivity VPN client (nortel), however I think I found the problem... I wasn't properly logged in into VPN session. I don't know how it worked in the first place. To my excuse, this laptop is being shared between team members... Still it was problem between keyboard and chair...

One of the most famous lines we use. But hey, you figured it out, which puts you over the crowd. If that was not the case I would of said to look into that switch if it was starting to go...
