MARATHON (Bungie)

Responding to a post claiming that Marathon lost 50% of its players (since the free Server Slam weekend) Overwatch's senior designer, Dylan Snyder posted this on Twitter..."Feel free to dislike and pass up any game you want, more power to you, but this is big unemployed, maidenless behavior"

"As someone who knows actual Overwatch player numbers, I tend to just laugh about SteamDB being used as a mic drop"

Snyder raises a key issue with drawing sweeping conclusions from Steam player numbers: it's only one platform, and it only tracks concurrent players, not copies sold...in Overwatch's case, of course, it's also on Blizzard's own launcher, Battle.net, but the sentiment stands that you can't get a complete picture of a game's success from concurrent players on Steam

translation: the game is doing better than what the haters want you to think...

It's still a statistically significant sampling to draw trends from, just not absolute player counts.

As someone who plays OW, the dev there should maybe just mind his own business. We all know devs/publishers/platforms can play games with numbers to make things look good. Same with some who make too much out of Steam player numbers. It is still a good indicator how well a game is doing.

Not only would I be surprised if Steam numbers didn't tell anything about how a game performs, you can add the review score to that as well, but I also find it curious that they won't disclose how much of a roaring success these games have been if the "haters" are wrong.

says the guy who thinks AC: Shadows sold well.

Sorry man, credibility is earned, not assumed.

Player count been steadily dropping. Not a total flop like Concord and HG but it wont have any staying power. It is definitely going to be a big loss.

Just occurred to me this is available on Steam, so maybe I give it a shot for a couple hours and return it if it sucks

Ex-Overwatch Boss: 'Shut the F*** Up' About Games You'll Never Play'

Jeff Kaplan, the former boss of the Overwatch team, has some short and candid advice for people who complain about games they have not and will never play: "If a game comes out, and you don't want to play it, and you've never played it? Shut the f*** up. No one cares"

"It's not difficult to sh*t on something. Apparently, it takes a ton of courage to say 'hey, I actually like this thing"

BS.

If something looks bad, I'll say it looks bad. Fucking deal with it.

If someone puts cat shit on a plate and calls it gourmet, I'm not going to 'keep my opinion to myself'. I'm going to say "Hey, that's fucking cat shit".

Lol. As soon as I saw this I knew people would quote this as rage bait with zero context.

Funny how so many Overwatch devs think their opinions are more valid than the gamers. I'd definitely trust them over anyone else...

This is literally the guy that was fighting against all the stupid decisions they made and quit because of it.

I know this game gets a lot of hate but I recently got it and so far I enjoy it despite the difficulty. I die way more in it than I do in Arc Raiders but I think the mindset is to treat it like a roguelite while you are starting out and just complete the contracts to level up factions and not worry about gear much.

It does have a steep learning curve as the items are not really clear what they do at first glance and there are a lot of mechanics to figure out.

The new raid-like map looks pretty fun and gives me Destiny vibes but it will be a while before I unlock all the prerequisites to play it.

It's doing better than Concord but looks like it's hemorrhaging players all the same.

It’s a solid game but leans towards the hardcore sweaty PVP side of extraction shooters which won’t appeal to a large audience. It’s probably been my favourite PVP experience since early days of R6:Siege, but if they don’t get the player numbers up I don’t see it lasting longer than a year in its current form.

I’m curious to see if they make it free to play or make it more casual to appeal to a larger audience. Although if they make it more casual they run the risk of ruining what they have that the core audience seems to like.

Yeah, it's going just like I predicted although I did shoot too high on the initial install base. Good game but too sweaty for most players. Sits in the same space as The Hunt Showdown in that regard.

"Player reception to Marathon is strong, with the game receiving a Metacritic score of 82 and more than 90% of the player reviews on Steam being positive. Engagement metrics such as retention also remain at a high level. "

Yet they've lost like 75% of their Steam player base.

I am fairly certain it's not any better and might even be worse on the console front.

We aren't even at the official end of the fiscal quarter and I think this is the first warning.

I can't see a path out for Bungie. I think they are cooked. There is no way to fix this in time.

I fully expect to see layoffs starting in June. It's going to be a helluva summer. If Sony feels they have to nickel and dime by getting rid of PC ports (this BS again?) then the reckoning is surely coming.

Even people that were even simping and glazing for this game have finally admitted that when you have the same amount of players on Marathon as a deliberately killed off almost ten year old Destiny 2 it's curtains. It needed to be a mode in a bigger game. Even people that love this game know it.

They've shown at least half the player base is on PC, so console is doing even worse.

People are tired of Sony shitting out live service hero looter shooter extraction slop and want them to focus on amazing single player games again.

Sony moving their gaming headquarters to California has really proven to be a very expensive mistake. Sure the first few years went well, but that’s because of projects that were already in the pipeline.

The amount of great single player games they could have funded with the money they flushed down the drain chasing way too many live service long shots. There’s only so much room in the market for Fortnite style success.

I think another question is how many aaa pvp games can the market support? There's a limit to the player base for sweaty pvp. Always has been. There's hundreds of choices out there now. I was honestly surprised Deadlock didn't explode way way bigger than it has and I think it's shooter fatigue. We're in the same overcrowded space that ultimately killed solid games like City of Heroes back in the day. Too many other high profile options that are established.

Or in other words, Bungie should have done something else more original.

Incredible that they are willing to burn hundreds of millions just to prove the chuds wrong.....take the L and shut it down already. Very surprising that shareholders and Sony Japan aren't revolting over this complete waste of money.

Sucks but not surpised. I think Marathon did the whole extraction shooter concept really well, even better than ARC I'd say (ARC community is weirdly passive, not really an extraction shooter at that point, its a wannabe helldivers)

Extraction shooters are super niche though. I don't know why these studios that it would be as big as the battle royale genre. So bummed even CCP Games is chasing this trend - killing off Dust 514 and the revival for an extraction shooter instead.

What we really need is another planetside 2/Dust 514 type game. Oh well. Bungie sucks

They missed the Battle Royale bandwagon and tried to catch the next bandwagon which was the Extraction Shooter bandwagon.

With how long it takes them to make games Bungie will miss whichever bandwagon they try to hop on.

They could have just added a BR or Extraction mode to Destiny 2.

If Bungie even survives the year.
