Ethernet Controller is a Wireless or Wired NIC(Network Interface Card). If you are using this computer with Internet, I am guessing that motherboard has two NIC's and only the drivers for one are installed.
It most likely wants a driver for it, so install the proper driver for that device...
Well, I had Windows XP, then Windows 7 on before. I wanted to install the latest build of 7, but when it finalizes(after putting in username, etc) it restarts and sits on black screen with blinking "_"
So, I tried installing XP instead (Which I have known to work) and it does a similar thing...
It defends sounds like the video card did break, it is definitely hardware related, only other option I believe is the motherboard itself. I would go find a video card to test the theory.

If a laptop gets hot doing nothing, and the cpu usage is idle, then there is most likely something wrong with the fan, it isn't drawing out heat. So either it is clogged by hair/dust, or is just malfunctioning.
