    Help! - Strange Artifacts

I followed denjerw's suggestion of a fresh win install. Now the DxDiag cube test works, but there is still the same problem when I play games. This is pretty frustrating :(. Maybe my graphics card is borked.

Personally, I would be a bit freaked out if my computer looked like that.

    Help! - Strange Artifacts

Card temps are low - around 55 degrees. I didn't reinstall Windows though. I have lots of stuff installed and I was hoping I didn't have to do that.

    Help! - Strange Artifacts

So the story goes like this. Recently, my old motherboard got fried and I replaced it with a SiS 755. All was well until I tried to play some games. There was a lot of artificing - black areas and rainbows. I googled around and I thought AGP fast writes could be the culprit, so I disabled...

Best PCI card for Win98SE Retro Gaming Rig?

Slightly off topic but, why don't you run a virtual machine with Win98SE on it and all your games? Save the trouble of the PCI card.

how much space do you actually uses? (all your drives together)

About 300GB. I have a lot of old downloads, LiveCDs, and raw video files lying around.

Sound not working on AVI movie

That could be your problem. But try installing K-Lite Codec Pack. It should have your codec in there. http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_Lite_Codec_Pack.htm

    gaming pc

@rtazz17 Setting up your own computer is not that hard, it can be intimidating at first, but its a good experience. And the AM2 is a dual core processor (from AMD). The Core 2 Duo is basically just the offering from Intel (which happens to be cooler and faster at this time).

    IDE v. SATA

Another thing to consider: some of the newer motherboards might not have as many IDE controllers (one of friend's mobo only has one).

Pick me a good 1GB stick...

Get Corsair Value Ram. It should be compatible with the two sticks and should cost around $60-70.

Should I upgrade my Athlon 3500+ Manchester?

Actually most of those games are pretty old and don't require much power (excepting Oblivion of course). For newer games, you might want to upgrade, but you still might be able to squeeze a bit of power out of your 3500+.

    Dropped Laptop

I suspect loose components. Maybe something got detached or unwired when it got dropped. But I doubt it. Laptops and computers in general are actually sturdier than you usually imagine. Personally, I've dropped my Dell Inspiron 2650 at least 5 times (2 of those being major falls) and have...

    Help...PC Problems

It appears to be a cooling problem; putting a portable fan next to the setup prevents the system from freezing. Maybe the heatsink on the CPU is not firmly attached?

    Two 22" or one 24"?

Two 22" monitors have much more screen estate than a single 24" monitor. As others have iterated, dual screens are great for work, esp. if you are programming, video editing, or doing graphics work. In addition, many games are beginning to utilise dual-screens (ie Supreme Commander).

    Help...PC Problems

I'm troubleshooting a newfound problem that my computer has (locking up/freezing completely when running 3D applications). Usually it does not freeze immediately, but after 10-20 minutes or so. I've swapped out the PSU and the graphics card with same results. Any ideas what else it could be?
