Bought a SAN for cheap now what the hell do I do?

I dunno if thats entirely true, because you can replace lefthand drive modules with larger ones don't know how you'd get it to recognize unofficial drives though.

Bought a SAN for cheap now what the hell do I do?

Oh man yea just reread your post. Lefthand does run on Linux, but the only thing you do through the interface on the SAN is configure IP addresses really. Go to: http://h18006.www1.hp.com/products/storage/software/vsa/index.html Download the 60 day trial, inside there there should be the...

Bought a SAN for cheap now what the hell do I do?

While Lefthand does work on regular x86 hardware. You should keep the OS that they have on there. Download the lefthand tools from HP (they bought them) and carve out volumes as you see fit then connect them in Windows through the iSCSI initiator and format the volume. Don't use it as a...

    Build-Log: 100TB Home Media Server

RAID doesn't address the consistency of the data on the drives themselves, something that ZFS does. As for speed: http://blog.nominet.org.uk/tech/2007/10/15/quick-zfs-performance-numbers/ Using a single treaded dd instance, 531MB/s is achieved on a Thumper which much fewer drives than...

    WMC Extender

You're looking for something called softsled which doesn't exist. If you have another VMC, you access the same media you have on the original through network shares, you wouldn't be able to get live TV streamed to the second PC though.

The [H]ard Forum Storage Showoff Thread - READ requirements in first post

If you mean just add another drive and expand the array and have the new drive protected no. The only way right now is to either replace all of the drives in the array with larger ones or add another drive to the pool. If you replace all the drives, you just pull one out, add the new one and...

Na, its running with raidz which is basically raid 5. Cool, I've been trying to figure that out. Here is a pic of the relevant info about the array:

How is this HTPC build?.....your input/suggestion please

I'm using the same motherboard but a 4450e in my HTPC and its pretty sweet. It plays back all my 1080p blu-ray rips without a problem. I can use ffdshow instead of coreavc too. I ended up using 2Gb of Mushkin in my setup and I haven't had a problem. I got this one off of newegg.

    Home Server

You realize that in the reply to your post on wegotserved: is actually talking about the landing zone which files are then moved off of. You can see this easily by taking a screen shot of the free space on a share from a windows computer. It will be the size of your primary hard drive's...

    Home Server

What I said is still true. PP1 only changed the balancing algorithm, you stil have a Landing Zone which is what is reported to computers when they look for the free space. The algorithm follows the rules in the link you posted, but the actual landing zone is still there and is where files...

    Home Server

It is still in alpha, but it is pretty stable, there's a bug where if you install the version for compact flash it doesn't import ZFS pools correct, but if you install to a hard drive you're fine. FreeBSD has a 7.0 release that has ZFS built in too. The important part, ZFS, is stable and you...

    Home Server

I think the problem he was referring to was when you start copying stuff to the drives. WHS uses your first drive as a staging area for DE to copy to the other drives. I was using a raptor too for my boot drive, when you look at the free space on any of the file shares you probably see...

    Home Server

Thats not the case at all, I was just providing a possible solution based on what I was reading. Its entirely possible that people have never heard of OpenFiler or FreeNAS as is it entirely possible that they've tried them and didn't like them. The OP expressed that he was looking to build a...

    Home Server

Is there any reason why aren't looking at FreeNAS or Openfiler? They're based on BSD and Linux, so if thats not your cup of tea thats cool, but they're pretty good solutions for home server needs. I'm a fan of FreeNAS 0.7 which is what I use on my home server, mostly because of the ZFS...
