    I cant oc my a64 3400+

hmm, all right. well two basic things that must be covered: one- more mhz = more heat two- more voltage = more heat. these are probably kinda obvious, but are normally the limiting factor when overclocking, unless you have very nice cooling. and to compound this, to go to higher mhz, the...

read the f'n manual ;) in all seriousness though, the manual is a tremendous wealth of knowledge that many people ignore because they feel they are above reading it. i'm not saying that you are like that, just a lot of people in general. it makes me sad :(

    a64 - heatspreader = slight problems

haha, to sum things up quickly, i'm a mechanical engineer major. i see something, i have to fiddle with it. ;)

    AMD 64 3400+ oc

ah, i forgot 3400+ newcastles have a 12x multi. try giving it 1.6v, and seeing how far it'll go. keep a close eye on the temps though :D

    $400 Upgrade

they're all kinda a hit and run thing. the newer ones oc much better than the old ones, so you should be set to go. and for that mobo.. it's not bad, a lot of people around here have it, but i'm not gonna recommend it if you really want to overclock.

    AMD 64 3400+ oc

wow, you did nothing but raise the ht to bring the cpu to 2.65ghz? that puts the htt at 240mhz, which if you have stuff that's on an unlocked header (be it pci, agp, or sata) is about the absolute max speed. that was the limit of my k8n neo until i moved my sata drive to the 3rd sata plug, now...

    I cant oc my a64 3400+

drop the ram divider one setting, and the ht multi to 3x make sure you're not using sata ports 1&2 set the agp speed to 67mhz to make sure the agp/pci bus is locked take the time to rtfm for that dfi, there are a ton of memory timings available in there, and i'll be honest, i'm not sure...

    $400 Upgrade

    3200+ winchester = 196 msi k8n neo2 = 148 total = 344 (w/o shipping) the 3500+ puts it over the $400 mark, so it's a no go.

New A64 3400+ heart attack today....

bleh, that's evil.. umm, i don't use the retention frame with my zalman, but is it possible to take it off without removing the motherboard? i know there's a backplate that's glued on that shouldn't come off unless some force is applied to it, but i forget if the screws were on the front or back...

    a64 - heatspreader = slight problems

haha, nah.. you did it first.. i'm just having annoying complications  and king: i'm not too worried if i kill it. sure, i'm gonna be out of $200, and a computer for a week, which will suck... but it's all part of the learning process, and letting others know what can and can't be...

New A64 3400+ heart attack today....

yeah, seems like people are learning the hard way that thermal paste is quite viscous, especially over a large surface area. next time, twist and slide the hsf off while pulling up somewhat gently.

Quick question about mixing and ram.

that may not really be true, i've had two sticks of them in two different systems and never had a problem with the spd's

    newb opteron question

if he's not planning on running more than a 2-way sytem, it should be fine. you might want to consider asking the question in the multiprocessing forum though

    AMD 64 3400+ oc

you mean the ht multi is locked? i'm not sure to detirmine the ht link speed in windows, but if it's stuck at whatever the max multi is, it could be a problem btw- you didn't give us much info on your system. the only thing that i'm really sure about is that you have a 2.2ghz clawhammer...
