Almost 200 Silicon Valley companies, including Proton and Y Combinator, are urging the Trump administration not to cut off access to Chinese open-weight artificial intelligence models or risk crippling the next generation of U.S. startups.

On Wednesday, the newly-formed Little Tech Association sent letters to President Donald Trump, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and others in the administration with its appeal, marking the first coordinated effort by Silicon Valley’s wider influential startup community to weigh in on one of the Trump administration’s most closely watched AI debates. At issue: whether Washington should restrict access to increasingly powerful open-weight — meaning, AI models whose weights are publicly available — AI models released by Chinese companies such as Moonshot AI and Alibaba.

Greatly pissed me off because for local hosting, Qwen models are generally where it's at, followed by Deepseek if you have 256GB+ VRAM. No doubt these fucking corrupt asshats are on board shutting that down, huh? Qwen 3.8 weights are going to be released soon too.

I like how we're quickly turning into a global joke. Just one with very pointy sticks.

Yeah, like AMD is going to release a GPU like that next year for under $2K.

Technically you can run DSV4F off of Antirez's repository on 128GB. It's just if you have 128GB, there are things that are technically faster to run anyway. 128GB can be had for about 4k right now, as a DGX Spark. Some AMD options are a bit cheaper. 256GB is about 8k, because that's 2x DGX Sparks connected via the Connectx-7 interface. The next competing option for both of those is 1-2x RTX 6000 Pros, which obviously have absolutely ballooned in price. For many dense Qwen models, though, things have gotten so optimized that you can run them on 5060's. Hell you can run a lot of open weight models on 5060s.

And you probably think I ranted enough about this shit, but no, this isn't even the half of it. What's even MORE bullshit about the reason they're trying to shut down open weight stuff? FUCKING PIRACY. THESE MOTHERFUCKERS ALREADY PIRATED AND USED "WELL IT'S AVAILABLE ON THE INTERNET" shit, or sometimes they LITERALLY pirated books and the fucking courts just let them get away with it and they got off scot-free. The amount of bullshit involved in this is insane. These companies are in the red so they're trying to just fuck everyone over on their way to recoup costs for all of these datacenters that aren't paying for themselves, and then they're wining about all of the stolen shit that they used to train their own models is now being pirated by Chinese companies to train their models.

Here's a timestamped WAN Show segment about it where I tried to kind of zoom in to where they give what is essentially my reaction to these fuckers, too. Which is a big fat middle finger. And meanwhile they're still trying to set up even more datacenters everywhere, which fucks over everyone else in the area... while they try to shut down competition so you're forced to use those closed models via subs. Yep. This is the fucking level of dickery we're at here, ladies, gents, and everyone else.
