The privately funded $20 billion “Project Camellia” will comprise of four buildings at the Savannah Gateway Industrial Hub, a 2,600-acre campus located just outside of Rincon. Georgia Power will provide the data center with 3.2 gigawatts of energy — enough to power over 2 million homes — to be delivered in phases from 2028 to 2032.

It was announced last night that OpenAI will be building a gigantic data center in Rincon, GA which is close to the Savannah area. Rincon is a small town of around 11K people that has aging infrastructure and fairly regular power outages. Hell, we just got fiber internet a few months ago. Ive lived here for six years and have seen the town grow tremendously - and property tax values more than double. Is this a good thing? Most of the population sure don't think it is. My friend went to a town hall meeting about it about an hour ago, which was abruptly cancelled and turned into a press release. It was apparently announced that this will be the largest data center in the world. News is still breaking. Will update here when we know more...

So which officials were responsible for cancelling the Town Hall and then putting out a fait accompli press release? Vote the bums out.

Same ones who decided we need apartments and a giant baseball stadium built a block from my house without even asking the community if we approve. Corruption is rampant around here. Moved where we did to get AWAY from all the noise and people, but it found us lol

Haven't heard anything new recently, however the community started a change.org petition. Ain't going to do anything in the end. Change.org

The Savannah, GA area political landscape is insanely corrupt. Chatham County is known as "Cheatem" county. If you think you can simply vote any of the bums out you're sorely mistaken. The oligarchs that own Georgia pay for certain outcomes - and they will get those outcomes one way or another. The citizens of Chatham and the area have little say in anything really important.

It's a hollow "victory" if the damage is already done or won't be prevented by the subsequent politicians.

So I did a Google search on "insanely corrupt Chatham County" and here is the AI-based reply.

If you are referring to Chatham County, Georgia, public trust has been shaken by several high-profile institutional scandals involving law enforcement exploitation, federal civil rights probes, and systemic transparency issues. [1, 2]
The most prominent controversies and investigations driving local allegations of corruption include:

⚖️ The "PIT for Pay" Law Enforcement Scandal
    • The Scheme: Four Georgia State Patrol troopers operating in Chatham County were fired and placed under investigation by state regulators. [1, 2]
    • The Misconduct: The troopers intentionally used Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT) maneuvers to end pursuits, subsequently filing personal injury claims to collect over $83,000 in payouts. [1, 2]
    • The Fallout: Over 26 DUI cases have been abruptly dismissed by Chatham County Recorder's Court, and District Attorney Shalena Cook Jones warns that up to 150 more cases could collapse because the fired officers refuse to show up and testify. [1, 2, 3]

🏫 Federal Sexual Misconduct Investigation
    • The Accusations: The federal government is cracking down on the school district's alleged systemic practice of "passing the trash"—deliberately transferring or moving staff members accused of sexual misconduct with students instead of firing and reporting them. [1, 2]
    • Prior Internal Failures: This federal oversight follows an internal audit of the school district's police department, which exposed mishandled evidence, a "toxic" culture, and systemic failures to complete Internal Affairs investigations on time. [1]

🚔 Jail Death Investigation Denials
    • The Incident: In late 2025, an inmate died inside the Chatham County Detention Center.
    • The Controversy: When Chief Deputy MacArthur Holmes requested the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) to open an official independent probe into the death, the request was flatly denied due to an unexplained seven-month lapse in time between the death and the local request. The delay has sparked widespread local criticism regarding cover-up allegations and transparency failures within the Sheriff's Office. [1]

    • The Probe: The U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights launched a massive Title IX investigation into the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System. [1]
