So what is the appeal of this new STEAM controller over the latest XBOX controller?
Gyro and touchpads and quality sticks that will not drift. It seems like perfect HTPC controller, which is a usecase I am getting one for.
I’m with you there. I’m very happy with my Xbox Elite controller.Seems reasonable for HTPC which I don't have however it I think its something I'll have to experience first hand if I'm to upgrade from a XBOX controller. Especially since I just replaced my XBOX controller with the newer textured version last month, lol.

You drop it and it screams Easter egg this is no joke.
You're gonna check the Wilhelm scream, right?Mine is out for delivery. Finally.

I occasionally find myself reaching for the offset positions still. How are the new STEAM controller owners here liking it so far? Especially in comparison to an XBOX controller?
AFAIK in Windows you'd have to add the game to Steam and then it would work. In Linux they just updated the SDL library to support the Steam Controller so it should work everywhere (without Steam) once it's pushed out (if it isn't already). Will the steam controller work on non-Steam Windows games? Like, could I retire my Xbox controller?
It doesn't emulate an Xbox controller so, not directly. But like Bankie said, if you add it as a non-Steam game into Steam, it should work. Will the steam controller work on non-Steam Windows games? Like, could I retire my Xbox controller?
Also, still waiting to see if sc5mu93 can verify the Wilhelm scream thing.
This is something that I've been wondering myself. Apparently, the Steam Controller doesn't have a "speaker" or audio interface in the traditional sense, the Wilhelm Scream and some other noises it makes are generated entirely by the haptics! I'd guess by default it does not support the DualSense using games, but in theory it could be possible if Valve creates an API that allows access to audio output and then someone else translates the calls from the DualSense API that allows Spider-Man titles to have the web "thwip" or Death Stranding's BB to come from the controller. In short, I don't think it works by default though I'll play around with it a bit, but its one of those things that seems in theory possible but may take a fair amount of work to get going.Does it work with the audio out work with the playstation games that use the DS5 speaker?
So far, so good! One thing to let everyone know before you get started- BOTH The Controller and Puck need Firmware updates to properly connect, at least in my case. The graphical "instructions" on the inside of the box of just connecting the Puck isn't quite enough; it would not sync with the controller etc. I suggest that users first A) connect the Controller via USB , while Steam is open. It will be detected and a firmware update will be pushed B) then connect the Puck via USB. It too will get a firmware update. Then C) press the Steam button on the Controller with the Puck connected, and things should work. If you need to check what is connected to what or see if there is a firmware update , Steam (at least in standard mode; not Big Picture) then go to the Settings and to Controller for details. How are the new STEAM controller owners here liking it so far? This is how the Switch Joy-cons work as well. This is something that I've been wondering myself. Apparently, the Steam Controller doesn't have a "speaker" or audio interface in the traditional sense, the Wilhelm Scream and some other noises it makes are generated entirely by the haptics!
Overall the actual function seems to be working pretty smoothly. I was using a DualSense Edge for awhile before this, despite preferring asymmetric thumbstick layout (Xbox Elite S2) previously before and can confirm that, much like the DualSense, the Steam Controller is one of the more comfortable symmetric layouts. Its essentially the very high quality Steam Deck input experience, in a stand alone gamepad and that's a good thing. I do wish that it had a few other admittedly niche features and that they'd make an "Elite/Edge" variant but aside from that it seems to be an excellent gamepad overall for PC use so far. I'll have to double check on things like Windows use w/o Steam and the like, yet can confirm it works well on Linux without issue.

Awesome win for those wanting to use the Steam Controller without Steam client!”
