Neo Geo AES+ re-release

I got a neo geo arcade machine recently. The carts are spendy, and I think the AES ones are worse? Even the multicarts are spendy (especially since they don't like all the system boards, so I had to get a new system board)

Considering one of the reasons why SNK failed the first time was they spread their limited resources too thin...I ask how they expect this to turn a profit for them?

Got a retro gaming buddy that just put in for the ultimate edition:

Personally, id never heard of the thing back in the day, or even until now; apparently it was a rich kid console (i was fortunate enough to have my rents get me a SNES for christmas is 94 or 95 for reference, one of my earliest memories) but im excited to give it a go to see what these hype is all about.

In looking over the collection in the ultimate edition, I don't recognize a single game (which is rare for me with a console post 1991 ish).

While cool, are there any banger games in the selection worth the 1k investment? Maybe im missing the hype?

Yeah, approximately nobody had it at home. It was pretty common in the arcades though.

Art of Fighting/King of Fighters and Samurai Showdown are probably the biggest franchises. Puzzle Bobble/Bust a move was everywhere, but like no need to buy it for that. I'm a fan of Windjammers, but the switch port is perfect, so...

Oh, yeah, metal slug is well liked; but not my style.

Interesting. Appreciate the insight, thanks.

Going to look into it a bit more. Especially how "it was common in arcades". You mean this hardware itself was inside the cab in some capacity?

There were a bunch of different cabinets, plus all the conversions, but here's a flyer for a 4-slot machine. There were 1, 4, and 6 slots, maybe a 2-slot?

First game came out in 1990, last in 2004. The final games were reasonably competitive with the state of the art (not 3d rendered, obviously)

the cabinets were all over, often as a multi game systems too(mvs). yes, thats why it was expensive.
Gotcha man. I maybe saw some when I was younger and just didnt realize what they were under the hood. Im mid 30s, be kind :D

Oh yeah, I don't expect youngins on the forums here. I'm mid 40s. Makes sense that you wouldn't be aware of these.

So many liquor stores when I was in middle school/high school had some flavor of sf2 and a neogeo machine with like samurai showdown, king of fighters, bust a move/puzzle bobble, and something random.

I liked King of the Monsters https://snk.fandom.com/wiki/King_of_the_Monsters it's not very good, but the theme is great.
