Nvidia and AMD in the U.S. are expected to raise the price of graphics processing units (GPUs) from January next year. The cost burden due to the high memory price is considered as the key background to the GPU price increase.
The two companies will not only increase the price once, but will enter into a phased price adjustment in the coming months. This can increase the price not only of consumer GPUs, but also expensive GPUs used in artificial intelligence (AI) data centers and servers at the same time.
According to the industry, AMD will increase some GPU prices from January next year, and Nvidia will increase some GPU prices from February next year.
The price increase will be made first, with some consumer GPUs, such as Nvidia's GeForce RTX 50 series and AMD's Radeon RX 9000 series. The initial release price of Nvidia’s flagship product, the RTX 5090, was $1999, and is expected to soar to $5000 next year.
Both companies are expected to continue to raise GPU prices every month. Not only consumer GPUs, but also GPUs for AI data centers and servers are likely to expand the scope of price increases to a full product line.
The move by these big tech companies to increase the price of GPUs is due to the rapid increase in the proportion of memory in the GPU cost structure. The price of memory for GPUs has skyrocketed this year, and big techs will not be able to maintain their existing GPU prices.
"The average share of memory in the manufacturing cost of all GPUs has recently exceeded 80 percent," an industry insider said.
