Horizon Zero Dawn (Official Discussion Thread)

It is was one of the first AAA games to pioneer so called woke politics in a game. Most of the characters are gay, the reclusive main tribe in the game should probably look mixed racially yet still have all the ethnic groups (maybe people just marry their own race in the Nora tribe), the male characters are almost all weak physically or mentally, male characters are almost always incompetent or villains, and it kind of beats the concept that men need women or are successful because of women. It was one of the first games where the oddball politics was too heavy and affected my ability to enjoy it, though I still think it was one of the better games I played over the last 8 or so years.
Ducky. Think I'll try it but I'll temper my expectations... :(. EDIT: Hopefully the gameplay is good enough to just ignore the story :p.

The overall story and delivery is actually quite nice. The overall lore and world building is good. They just kind of shoot themselves in the foot with mid 2010 era politics/culture in a world where it doesn't quite make sense.

Saw a post that it runs better than the original??? Can anyone confirm.
Cannot confirm. I hope there are some official benchmarks just for informational purposes.

I'm running a 7800X3D + 3090RTX at 3440×1440, the original seemed solid maxed out and I'm able to run Forbidden West maxed out with DLSS (without dynamic resolution scaling) at 100 Hz vsync / 100 FPS smooth. With the remaster and the 'very high' preset, I need to use both DLSS and dynamic resolution scaling to hit a smooth 100 FPS. I think Forbidden West looks great, they brought that into the remaster, but I *feel* that the remaster is more demanding than Forbidden West, which doesn't seem to make sense.

I think things are sharper in the remaster, but I really need some side-by-side shots to tell. I only got it because I already owned it, so $10 wasn't terrible.

The remaster looks really nice. I'm not obsessed by FPS. I'm running it maxed out on my 7900x/7900xtx setup @ 4k/120Hz with native XeSS rednering AA, no FSR upscaling or frame-gen, it runs fine and is relatively smooth.

Adrenalin CP tells me I am averaging 95.9FPS. Since the game supports anti-lag 2.0 I might turn on frame gen and see how it does. But right now with VRR it seems fine without it.

I picked up for 10 bucks knowing well that I will never play this game again lol.

The default max fov (1.25) was giving me tunnel vision so I made an FOV hack in cheat engine.
Will upload to Nexus in a few days once I'm sure it runs ok.

Just finished, Steam says 44 hours. I did everything including the DLC, except collect all the datapads, and skipped the hunting grounds.
Campaign was great but killing the same machines over and over got really old after the first 10-15 hours. Frankly, the game peaked in the starting area. I also found some of the quest lines (especially the Erend/Ersa quests) to be tedious and boring.

The remaster seems to be quite buggy. Sometimes when aiming your bow, it will automatically activate Concentration. This annoyed me the entire playthrough. There's also an audio bug that causes some dead machines to keep making noises, which interrupted some cutscenes and generally annoyed me while exploring. Also each time I start the game it would sometimes hang at a black screen and I was forced to close and relaunch, and each time I exit the game Steam gets stuck at "Running" and I had to completely close and relaunch Steam. I think these problems were caused by the Advanced Configurator which is now deleted from Nexus.

Moving on to FW. I will be glad to be rid of all these issues in the sequel.

I've read through much of the posts here and on Steam about the remastered version of ZD, and some say it's better than the OG and others say it's a buggy mess.
I own the OG ZD but have never played it before, so I'm wondering if it is worth the $10 to buy the Remaster for my first play through or just save my money and play the OG instead?

same here, have it, even installed it once, never got around to playing it though...
could always try it first, should be able to crank it right up and should look decent enough.

It's worth the 10 dollars. It's a great game.

Purchased. :)

didn't they replace the original with the remaster meaning you can no longer purchase the original game?...in that case you don't really have a choice anymore but it's still worth playing...hopefully there aren't too many bugs and any graphical downgrades won't be noticeable because you never played the OG

I have both now.
I bought the OG like 2yrs ago, that's how I was able to get it for $10.

And the OG store page is still there.

I think you'll like it. I was on a very long hiatus from video games, and this game made me a gamer again, if that means anything. It's not a perfect game, but the story is fantastic. They watered down the combat in the second game. In this game, you can be creative and come up with a million different ways to take down big enemies. It's quite fun. I honestly felt like a kid again playing this game.

I agree 1 > 2 in every way.

That's what I'm going to do, rather than buy the Remaster upgrade off the bat. I'm in the same boat.

I haven't played Forbidden West yet but I heard the opposite- they made the combat more complicated in the 2nd game

It's not more complicated. It's watered down. If by "more complicated" they mean less options than the first game, then yes. It's more boring, not more complicated. It's also easier. The second game is still amazing, it's just not as good as the first. The final boss fight of the second game is also very stupid.

Don't trust Sony and Hollywood not to fuck this up, especially after seeing how atrocious Uncharted was.

Wasn't the worst movie, but the first half was very dull and the casting was bad IMO. For a video game adaption it is decent, which isn't a high bar to meet unfortunately. I can't imagine this movie will be much better.

Who do you think they will cast as Aloy? I'm thinking Zendaya, she's huge these days.
Rost of course will be played by The Rock.

Amber Midthunder as Aloy...the actress is half American Indian so it fits perfectly with the role...she was also the lead actress in that pretty good 2022 Predator movie (titled Prey)

The games have enough story to support the gameplay and art direction.

They don't have anywhere near enough story to support movies or books. What memorable characters? What deep interaction?

I guess if they just want to make a Transformers action movie with low tech Indians doing the robot fighting it's got enough for that... Enough to suck horribly.
