World of Warcraft Forever

WoW 😳 😮

Wait is this like a different take on Classic? Or something completely new?

The graphics look a bit cheese, so I'm guessing it's still using the ancient vanilla engine, not the Midnight engine?

Holy shit they actually did it.

This might be amazing. Retail literally plays nothing like the Wow of olde at this point. Straight up entirely different game.

Classic is a lot of fun, even with the rough edges.

If they can nail classic but with actual quality of life improvements (read: not shit that just dumbs things down) , and good new content then they're going to have an insane winner I think.

Looks like the most modern engine, just with some old artwork underneath.

They shut down my beloved Ascension for this, better be worth it.

edit: The new race is paywalled $30. The race itself is just a reskinned Blood Elf.

Couple good Reddit comments, I 100% agree;

How many times can they put out the same game with a new coat of paint? My goodness. Give us an actual true next gen, all new WoW 2 already.

I've always known that there is an audience for classic but I'm still amazed that Blizzard not only did classic but are now doing classic+. This is genuinely insane, where's the fresh brand new content moving forward with all new original stuff?

And not just retail Midnight type new stuff, but a new next gen game engine, and new classes and races and character models set in a whole new game world and new lore, etc...

Damn, I wish Blizzard would just give us World of Diablo already, a next gen MMO set in the Diablo universe being mature and dark.

I wouldn’t mind a StarCraft MMO, but it would be harder to develop than a Diablo MMO since you’d have multiple planets to explore as well as space battles. A lot more systems to create and balance, but then also a lot more variety in game. Expansions could add new planets.

Meanwhile the Diablo universe could very easily convert into a traditional MMO with different factions.

Yeah the way the pay walled the race is... certainly a choice.

I don't know why they even made a new race???

Why not use existing elves that already have lore? Or goblins? Or something else? Weird decision in general. Doesn't make any sense to me.

The more videos I see on Forever, it does look interesting, and I will try it out. I'm glad they did give the option for new graphics and transmog. I don't want to play WoW with 2004 graphics, I mean come on, we all have systems that can handle better WoW graphics at this point. And transmog is something I've always enjoyed, I hate looking like I'm dress like a clown running around Azeroth.

It's cool how they've added new zones, and redone classic zones, so hopefully this feels fresh, and not just replaying a game I played 20 years ago.

This could be good. I always liked the idea wow but every time I tried to get into it I realized I was so far behind on the story, the updates in mechanics, where I needed to go or what I should be doing. Maybe if this just reset everything and went back to basics I’d be in.

I'll not understand how they decided to just pull some random new "genie sky elves" out of nowhere instead of just giving people High Elves. As others have said, when you compare this so far to what some private servers (Ascension, TurtleWoW etc) did it just seems a bit shallow. Okay, they're using some retail assets to make new zones out of them in different ways, but it would have been nice if they added a bunch of actually new stuff. They're Blizzard, with Blizzard assets and resources, even diminished under the Activision by way of Microsoft ownership.

On the good side, I see the package for the new Forever Skyborne race comes with the "Zergling, Diablo, Panda cub" pets, which were previously only available with the Collector's Edition of the original vanilla WoW (the only old one I didn't have at the time); back when I was playing WoW during Legion , one of these vanilla CEs cost thousands upon thousands with a viable key. Much like how they made the Feldrake, a mount that came from the collectable card game and cost $500+ on card sale markets, as a Twitch drop and several other 'loot card in game items' became part of the Traders's Tender in game content ernable, I like seeing some old very exclusive stuff made more available especially if it was out of game/payment acquired. I wonder if the pets will be available on retail as well which would be nice; I think pets/mounts are account wide but don't cross over from classic to retail automatically though.

Ultimately I have some of the most important gaming memories from WoW, playing from vanilla through the Legion expansion, but from what I've read about it seems they've made so many poor decisions (including the great censorship patch of 2021), took the story in strange places from BFA and into Shadowlands and beyond, and most worringly the monetization has gotten more extreme - after finally giving players housing, I see there's an entirely new set of premium currency for it. They could probably tempt back many long time players if they would cut down on the FOMO and no-longer-avaiilable stuff (the lack of the Mage Towers during the Legion Remix was disappointing. I do wish they'd bring back both the Legion and Pandaria Remixes, or at least allow their features and content to rotate in retail much like Timewalking) , improve monetization, and overall make it easier to return and pick things up and play the entire story and content you missed... but I don't know if they intend to do so vs trying to squeeze more out of existing players and court a generation that are used to everything being monetized left and right. I guess we'll see.

On Thursday was my first day of radiation school and then shit gets announced on Saturday?! I literally need to get my life together if i intend to add this to my schedule. Thank god my kids are now 15 and 13 and can atleast cook dinner :barefoot:

I threw my credit card at blizzard so fast and got the physical collectors edition.

As in a mod that queues up skills?

That's a new feature Blizzard officially created and introduced in retail last year which I thought it was stupid and silly at first. But actually I use it a lot, especially in classes I don't play a lot or still learning. It definitely helps.

I'll even play my my Frost DK using that SBA and it's surprisingly very good! And my DPS isn't number one top of the game or anything , but it's pretty good with SBA.

As above, a feature that was added to retail last year. The game suggests what ability to use next and you can press the button assigned to your quick bar to use it. It is actually pretty good, but it won't suggest things like mana dumps, so you still need to manually rotate to maximize your DPS. I don't know how it works with support and healing builds, though, as I have not tried it.

Exactly.

You still need to have your defensive cooldowns ready and a few other spells that SBA doesn't use, but overall I think it makes the game play a little more streamlined and not having to have a dozen plus different keys to press, now I just need to press like 2 to 4 keys mostly as opposed to 8 or so.

I haven't played much retail lately. I keep meaning to but then get annoyed at the dumbing down of some things and play classic instead.

Honestly I hate rotations. It was always the most boring part of WoW for me, i started in vanilla. Really never was a fan of having to research through third parties how to play the game. I enjoy the dance of mechanics more than rotation. I did enjoy gear and stat/secondary optimization though.

Very interesting comment by that original poster and then the following replies are good too

Basically what a lot of them are saying and I think I have to agree with this now, is that Forever isn't World of Warcraft from 2004, and it's not retail World of Warcraft from 2026. It's a unique thing sort of in the middle. It's new and not totally "classic" sort of a hybrid of the original vanilla from 22 years ago, but also not what 2026 retail WoW is, If that makes sense?

I think the idea is taking the 'best of both worlds' and putting it together. But that is so opinion based it would be a hard thing to put together and make the most happy. I hope it works out, I would like more people brought into the wow universe.

I was never into or wanting to play Classic or Classic+ or any of that, I have always been a current retail guy from the beginning. I like the modern graphics of new WoW and transmog and M+, etc...

But I will say, Forever really has me interested, it does sound fresh and cool, and like I said, I never cared about Classic whatsoever, as I already played it myself back in the day 20+ years ago, no reason to replay the exact same game again decades later. But the new volumetric fog, the new light rays, the new water effects and reflective puddles, all designed to bring more ambience and a cozy feeling to Forever, just seem so damn cool, and a great idea. I'm glad it's not just World of Warcraft from 2004, copy + paste, that would be lame and get old quick. I have to give Blizzard credit for trying this unique sort of middle ground approach with Forever, and not just going full on 20 year old outdated game mode.

Well I am tenatively hopeful this may end up being good. They may be able to get me to play again. All the vidoes so far have got me interested, and I hope they can follow through with what they have shown so far.

Checked out a few streams today. Not a fan of the new UI but otherwise I like what I see. Noticed a couple changes already in the beginning areas so I turned it off so as not to spoil my own journey. Can't wait!

Are you guys and gals gonna join the beta? Or just wait till the November launch?
I might have a look at it today if I get time.

I'll either roll a rogue killing specialist or a rogue. Or maybe both. It'll get deleted in a few months anyway.

That new race's racial traits look like they're made for raids over pvp.

edit* Game looks to have a memory leak, and now also won't let me load it up in DX12. This game will totally be ready in less than 3 months. ;)
