I dont play it but i heard it took quite a while for them to refine and craft it to where it is now, and that it's a much better game now.

At least they seem to be actually making games again, and not just milking WoW and Hearthstone micro transactions. Maybe having the fear of losing their jobs in a tight job market for their industry is a great incentive to actually ship product.

Pains me to say this but literally nobody wants or cares about a new Diablo game.
Considering the timeframe I assume they are just reusing/updating the Diablo 4 engine, effectively a reskin or an asset flip with minor upgrades. People weren't coming back for D4 seasons/xpacs so they are just refreshing it into a new game to milk money. Mark my words, this will look and play almost identical to D4. "This should've been an expansion" will be uttered by many.

I have no faith in Blizzard any more. While Diablo 3 had many issues initially they managed to turn it into something that was a lot of fun over the long haul. Diablo 4 was a fun, short burst single player experience and the changes they made over the last few years were in the right direction but the long game is boring and feels like a real slog to get through. I couldn't even bring myself to play the latest expansion for more than a couple of hours. Whatever magic D2 and eventually D3 had, D4 is still missing. I just can't imagine at this point that D5 will be any different... I do hope that I'm wrong though.

Exactly how I felt when I saw the announcement.

Diablo 3 started out terribly, but it did eventually become fun a couple years later. I know Diablo 4 has improved, but I feel bored while playing it, even after the changes. I still have one more free seasonal pass, but afterwards, I just can't see myself putting any more time into the game.

I agree with you, that this is not the same Blizzard. Maybe I'm just old and out of touch.

The new narrative writer has a decent history having worked at Bioware on the original Dragon Age Origins etc before the company decided to self delete.

Jennifer Brandes Hepler (usually credited as Jennifer Hepler) is the narrative director for Diablo V. She joined Blizzard in mid-2025 as Narrative Director for the Diablo franchise and has been speaking publicly about the sequel’s story at BlizzCon 2026.

She is the main story architect for Diablo V: players are the Heir of Westmarch, a fugitive with a unique, two-way bond with Diablo himself (insight into him plus vulnerability to his influence). The game is set after Diablo has already won, with the campaign built around surviving a fallen Sanctuary, assembling a caravan of survivors, and defining yourself in opposition to the Lord of Terror.

Writing history

Hepler has more than 20 years in games and scripts, with a focus on dark fantasy, character-driven stories, and world-building.

  • Tabletop RPGs (early career): Supplements for Shadowrun (Cyberpirates), Earthdawn (The Ork Nation of Cara Fahd), Paranoia, and Legend of the Five Rings.
  • TV: Writer on CBS’s The Agency (credited as Jennifer Brandes).
  • BioWare (2005–2013), senior writer:
    • Dragon Age: Origins — dwarven civilization and culture, Dwarf Commoner origin, Orzammar, and the Deep Roads.
    • Dragon Age II — Anders, Sebastian, Bethany, and most mage–Templar plotlines; lead writer on the Legacy DLC.
    • Dragon Age: Inquisition (credited writer).
    • Star Wars: The Old Republic — multiple planetary/world quests (Taris, Tatooine, Nar Shaddaa, Balmorra, Alderaan, etc.).
  • After BioWare: Lead writer on the mobile game Game of Thrones: Ascent; senior writer at Pixelberry Studios on Choices visual-novel/romance titles; narrative consultant on the 2018 adventure game Unavowed; contributor to the 2015 book The Game Narrative Toolbox.
  • She has also spoken at GDC on narrative structure and exposition.
MobyGames lists her in the Blizzard development family for Diablo IV: Lord of Hatred (2026), consistent with her joining the company the previous year.

She is known for “dark heroic fantasy” (a phrase she coined that BioWare used for Origins marketing) and for building detailed cultures and morally complicated characters. Her Dragon Age II work, especially Anders, drew intense online harassment at the time, including threats; she later left BioWare for family and freelance reasons.

I'm out, I have pre-purchased them all. I was very disappointed in the last one. Too much hype, no delivery. Can not stand the in app purchase crap either.

It's only going to get worse. It wouldn't surprise me one bit if one of the future Diablo's became an Xbox Cloud exclusive, now that they charge by the hour.

Raxx thinks this was originally the Diablo arc for D4, but they realized the game was a sinking ship so they cancelled everything else and spun it off into a new game.

It's for the best if that's true. There are gameplay elements with D4 that make it annoying sometimes. And if really annoys me that every time I load the game, everything is different so I have to relearn how to play every single time.

It could also be because then they can update the engine to look better for the Helix in the PS6 consoles which should be out by then. It's possible they'll both have some type of DLSS5 clone, and to use it efficiently would require some changes with the engine. Maybe scan in your face with an app and have it applied to your character. The built in AI would then fix the look so it fit correctly.

I played the heck out of diablo 3, enjoyed it since release. 4 I had fun with but didn't feel attached to it and it faded off fast. The characters were forgettable and the bosses as well.

I enjoyed the original Diablo. Diablo II is one of my favorite games of all time. I wore out several mice playing that over the years. Diablo III just never grabbed me. I quit playing it after about an hour. I never tried Diablo IV.

IMO, Blizzard stopped being Blizzard in 2008 when Activision bought them out (or merged, whatever). They made great games, because the founders and developers were gamers. Most likely these early teasers are to get focus away from more recent news of sexual assault, and harassment. The higher ups were raping their employees since 2008 and covering it up. Looks like nothing's changed, except that people are coming out.

Diablo 2 is a continuation of Diablo.

Diablo 3 just is not like Diablo 1 or 2 and was not that great of a game until they completely revamped it with the expansion. Then it became fun, but it still doesn't feel anything like Diablo 1 or 2.

Diablo 4 on the other hand was fun in very small spurts, such as the weekend PTRs they had before the game was released. But after that, it gets boring really quickly, and Blizzard hasn't really fixed it at all. It's better than what it was on release, but still not that great of a game for anything longer than a weekend session once every few months.

I never played Diablo 4. Diablo and Diablo 2 were pretty similar, both were good. Diablo 3 had co-op, which was the best part.

I feel like for those of us who played 1/2 , as noted, 3 got better, but now, in general, it just seems hard to make the game new and exciting...

How many new demon bosses can they make..I mean, this applies to any game really, rehash of a rehash. I bought 4 after sometime when it went on sale, I enjoyed it for a good time, but then every new season, the grind just became so redundant, and I guess for me, getting max Torment levels didn't really matter, so you just end up going around on maps steam rolling everything and helping out people who arent up there yet.

I know. For me, I think what would be fun is being able to build your own base, and activate a "Defend your Base" mode. For each level you defend your base, you get better gear than you would find in the dungeons, but the downside is that if you don't defend your base, it gets destroyed (so there's risks).

A main issue, if not the main issue, with Diablo 4 is the itemization. There's just nothing that screams reward.

So, we have Diablo 1 & 2. I don't think those need any more covering. Diablo 3 went wrong with the release in that the Real Money Auction House made Legendaries near impossible to ever find. You could go a week playing 100+ hours without ever seeing one. And then 90% of the time it was weaker than a random yellow item. Blizzard eventually fixed it though in that you would never go more than an hour without seeing one. And over time, they became too common for my own personal taste, but at least you knew what to look for and what to avoid.

Diablo 4 wasn't like that. Legendary powers could be reprinted onto yellows. And because 90% of the time, a Legendary item was weaker than a yellow, it meant that you had to examine every single yellow item that dropped, similar to Diablo 3 at start. Where Blizzard improved upon it was that it was only the one imprint, but now you can store the highest value of the item. So, for another year or so, you still had to pick up every item under the sun to find the right gear. But with the latest expansion, now you could craft your gear and add and remove stats to your hearts content, so you no longer have to pick up everything, just an item with the correct Greater Affixes.

But this leads to the situation that there's nothing which screams I've got to have this. Pick up every Legendary and destroy them, because it honestly doesn't matter what it is. You can and will craft better gear than anything you can find, with very small exceptions of my once every 500 hours. There's just no excitement, so the grind becomes just that, a grind, with nothing to work towards but items you salvage for crafting materials, but that's not really exciting.

Diablo 1 and 2 had coop as well. I spent way too much time in college playing d2 with classmates.

I don't get satisfaction on these types of games anymore though. The skinner box is too obvious and it feels like work. I setup a session of d1 with a friend and we had a good evening, but at the end I had no desire to play again.

Diablo 1 is a definitely a one and done in modern times.

It was something else when it came out though. Connecting the ol' dial-up internet and going on battle.net, clicking that gem, and inevitably getting a Godly Plate of the Whale from some hacker lol.
