Optiscaler Does What AMDon't​

This time, the Optiscaler team has cooked up something big. They've finally solved one of the biggest issues to-date with FSR 4: the Vulkan wall. You see, since its launch nearly a year ago, FSR 4 has remained off limits for Vulkan, due to some technical limitation or the other - frankly, I'm not sure anyone cares too much about the exact reason. What the community does care about is the fact that it's been nearly a year without any developments in this regard. No communications, no plans to finally bring FSR 4 to Vulkan games, nothing. This, as well as AMD's reluctance to officially release the INT8 version of FSR 4, has been one of the biggest pain points for users.

So how has the Optiscaler team managed to pull off the impossible? Technical details are currently scarce, but what's clear for now is that whatever fundamental technical limitation prevents FSR 4 from being added to Vulkan games hasn't been lifted. Optiscaler is simply adding a "compatibility path," so to speak.


Conclusion: All Hail Optiscaler​

Now, some of you might be wondering why all the fuss for FSR 4 on Vulkan, since hardly any new AAA games come out that are fixed to Vulkan. Certainly, Doom: The Dark Ages and Indiana Jones and The Great Circle are the only examples that come to mind when considering recent Vulkan-only AAA releases. And I agree with that to some extent: it's not a big issue in terms of the usability of FSR 4. What I take issue with is the fact that it's been nearly a year without any kind of communication or timeline from AMD to eventually sort this out. The fact of the matter is that users shouldn't have to mess around with a mod to get decent upscaling working on a game, especially when improved upscaling is one of the biggest sells of RDNA 4.

Well, I digress. The good news is that if you have the patience to mod it in, Optiscaler now enables you to play your favorite Vulkan-only titles with FSR 4. There is a performance hit, but not enough to invalidate the usefulness of this feature. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that Optiscaler is now a must for anyone wanting to play RDR2 on an RDNA 3 graphics card or newer. The image quality gains provided by FSR 4 in that game specifically are well worth the performance hit, and now that it works with Vulkan, there's almost no downside.

I also don't understand why. Like, it would seem to me that the most work would be training the model. Once you have that, I wouldn't think integration for cards would be a ton of work. I mean I know it isn't nothing, you want to make sure it works well, but like DF literally demonstrated that it works already... how is there a year of work left?

I mean I'm glad they are doing it and hell, I think they should bring it to nVidia and Intel cards too. That could be something to try and elevate FSR, which it had in the past: It runs on any platform. Like FSR3 wasn't the best looking compared to DLSS... BUT you could use it on any card. So if you wanted to support only one upscaler, that was a good choice.

Yeah the performance validation likely takes the lions share of the time involved and AMD is probably weary of hearing how bad FSR's first iterations looked compared to DLSS. The fact that they're even trying make it work is great news for many gamers especially considering AI's impacting on the industry as a whole. I know I'm happy to see official FSR 4 support for 7000 series since FSR 3 does look awful most of the time.

They have already been working on this for some time. A whole extra year is dubious, IMO.

I suspect they may be hoping to push RDNA 2 users to upgrade.
 
There is I'm sure truth to that as all companies wanna move inventory but layoffs and focus shifting to AI has surely impacted their graphic divisions ability to deliver to such a small segment of their total revenue stream. I'm not making excuses for AMD. I'm merely looking at the big picture and trying to understand why they seemingly make some really poorly timed decisions.

I get the feeling someone with half a brain finally managed to realise no one was going to trust them to support RDNA 5 if this is how they treated RDNA 3 and 2 customers, so sales were going to be horrible. Of course it also perfectly lines up with the release of the Steam Machine so maybe the person pointing that out was from Valve telling them and not someone internal to AMD, as the Radeon team never misses an opportunity to miss an opportunity.

Loaded up Cyberpunk and it's noticeably better than FSR 3 at cleaning up the image. And the modes lower than quality are usable unlike 3 where it looks terrible on anything but quality.

Game sample size of 1. Might look at some other games later if I own them.

Massive hardware improvements are not going to be every generation anymore. Silicon by the square millimeter is becoming more valuable then some precious metals.

The video is about the terrible frame pacing in FSR's implementation of frame generation, not how good the image looks.

Yep, plus unlike Nvidia's, they don't require their antilag tech to use framegen, so it's a laggy mess too. Reflex is a godsend.

Does FSR4+ work on Nvidia and Intel GPUs? Last I checked, it's officially a Radeon exclusive feature for RDNA 4 and RDNA3. How does that help everyone?

It does not, though they could make it work since all cards can do INT8 calculations (that's basically what shaders do for a lot of the graphics in a game).

I suspect AMD has figured out that adding upscaling support is easy enough that they'll get support without having to support every card out there. I have an ARC B580 in one of my rigs and there are few new AA titles that don't support XeSS. The only recent one I have that doesn't support XeSS is Bloodlines 2, and that's AA not AAA. I'm sure there are others, but the point here is AMD is not worried about game devs including FSR4 support just because it's exclusive to newer AMD cards. Same goes for Intel really, though I suspect XeSS support is more about iGPU support than ARC cards. Today's shiny new AAA title is tomorrow's old game that runs on an Intel iGPU. I think what's going to happen in the near term is game devs will implement the lastest DLSS, FSR and XeSS and lean on XeSS for older card support. XeSS works on Pascal and RDNA1. Maybe they keep FSR3 around until AMD releases FSR4+ for RDNA2. It's supposed to be coming around the end of the year.

We'll probably still see a few games that skip one or more of them. AMD sponsored titles with FSR & XeSS at launch, DLSS comes later. NV sponsored titles with DLSS and XeSS at launch and FSR comes later. I suspect the most often permanently skipped upscaler might actually end up being DLSS. Lightweight titles might need an upscaler to run on an iGPU, but NV only has discreet GPUs. The slowest GPUs that can run DLSS are a 2060 and 3050, both of which can beat most Intel & AMD iGPUs. In time those will be dropped from support. Then the slowest supported NV card will be a 4060, which will probably still beat a lot of current iGPUs by the time that happens. So lightweight titles may well skip DLSS and just implement XeSS & FSR because the slowest supported NV card doesn't need upscaling at native 4k max settings. Civilization 7 is pretty close to that. 3050 benched at 27fps at 4k max settings, which is quite playable in a turn-based game if you're nutty enough to drive a 4k screen with a 3050. Once upon a time I tried Civ 5 on a 2GB netbook with a tiny little dual core Intel CPU. Got 15fps. Was quite playable. So basically I think some games will skip DLSS because no supported NV card is slow enough to need it.

Skip DLSS? Not likely when NV has 80% market share and their ISV relations team are the gold standard in getting their tech into games.

I remember whenever AMD gets APU design wins for Sony and Microsoft consoles (which are the lowest common denominator in gaming hardware). Some people assumed that that would mean all PC ports would automatically be optimized for Radeon and Nvidia would be left to dust but that doesn't seem to happen at all. In fact, Nvidia's innovations are being copied by their competitors and consoles. See the PS5 Pro.

A game might if the demands are low enough that there is no need... On the other hand since it is a part of most engines these days, why NOT have it, particularly since DLAA is extremely competent TAA.

I remember whenever AMD gets APU design wins for Sony and Microsoft consoles. Some people assumed that that would mean all PC ports would automatically be optimized for Radeon and Nvidia would be left to dust but that doesn't seem to happen at all.

I wonder if Nvidia will make a "DLSS lite" version for those like on the Switch 2. Might not even be necessary.

They'll just run the (then) current DLSS models/profiles/preset combinations to varying degrees most likely I'd think - no sense in a 'custom DLSS' when the overall system/ecosystem (PC) is the same and pre-existing - unlike as with the Switch 2 - DLSS Ultra Performance with an 'old'/lesser taxing model via the Nvidia app, as we already have possible/selectable now, is the 'DLSS Lite'

It could be really hard without a game engine hook and all driver level to do this right.... has frame time and frame velocity can change in non linear way, the buffering and monitor tech aspect.

Even for their game engine hook solution, nvidia needed Optical flow accelerator were able to handle this in real time (and now recent transformer model on the recent tensor cores), but even Nvidia has yet to do it on turing-ampere level hardware right, i.e. does not seem to be something that pure shaders/regular gpu not built with it in mind as an easy software solution for.

I am not sure low level display panel sync/display controller issues/gpu die scheduler can necessarily be all fix via software.

It is true that it is not a big priority, upscaling seem way more important than frame generation if you are to put effort in that space, regular "reflex" lower lantency probably has well.
