So before anything about LPAR, they missed the perfect corporate marketing opportunity in working together.

When Apple went to PowerPC they had dumped loads of work into it, working with IBM and Motorola, creating the AIM alliance….. Well….. We coulda had AMD, AsRock, Sony…..

Anyways, if you know anything about hardware passthrough, and VM’s, IBM LPAR’s are VM’s on meth. Essentially your Power 5 CPU, honestly the damn things are so bloody big I’m going to call it a Compute Plate Unit, can be logically divided on-die, and die logic can be grouped if you had, say, 8 CPU’s in a drawer. Instead of having everything be virtual, the only “Virtual” part of the whole thing is basically firmware level, saying C0 on P0 groups with C3 and C4 on P5 and C1 on P7 in order to route data to not collide on huge huge demand, etc, is almost required when running, say, a junction for a cross ocean trunk, or needing real hardware “VM’s” in a trading center like NYCSE, there’s just nothing that can match it.

Now, the BC-250, on the other hand, is, to me, LPAR in reverse. Rather than dividing the cores up, you have _12_ slabs to choose how to cluster or use for entire service stacks. This doesn’t sound amazing at first since no one really uses GDDR for desktop crap, but I have a theory I want to test…. Mostly just to see what happens.

We have 2 types of NVMe drives, and each BC-250 slice, similar to the Apple nMP, runs off of a singular NVMe SSD. This SSD hooks up to a bus that can run at the same speed as the fastest R/W speeds of memory dies available, anywhere from 6800MT/s up to 8400MT/s, if you overclock.

I want to know what happens if you get a 16GB BC-250, and a Host Bus Memory NVMe Drive, which uses the host bus RAM as its cache, and test it against a DRAM cache SSD, testing if the memory type would change anything. I theorize that the DRAM would be slower, the only advantage really is that it’s basically directly hooked up to the Die itself. But I wonder what happens if the trunk is so ungodly big that it’s like free-falling into a bottomless pit…. What happens?

As well, there may be other systems out there that use HBM. I don’t really know, but why is it a 250? Is there a 150? What’s a 200? WHATS A 100??? How do ya’ll have a format for this already? What gives? I’m fascinated

The one thing I have to remember though is that using GDDR IS LITERALLY like free falling into a bottomless pit. If things bump into each other on the way down, everything gets punked and nothing works. I liken this to the difference to TCP and UDP data streams in your basic IP stack. Or using Jumbo Frames on your router after you hack it to bump up your data speeds to Twitch from OBS.

I mostly have interest in a full 12X rack because I believe, if set up correctly, it would be uncontrollably fast. However, there seems to be a few builders outside of AsRock, so leading question…. What’s the backplane do? Can I plug in a 100GBPS NIC into the backplane and dump that trunk to the slices? Is the at least like a GBe trunk the slices can communicate thru? What the hell does the thing do?

If I were to investigate the slices by themselves, the leading thing I need to know is what all the signals actually are to the backplane. Do I need to tape it, or will it also communicate to a computer? I have some silly things I would do with one, like put it in a G5 Quad, or a Pentium 4 Extreme PC. Just….. Because. Something something VLIW GPU Netburst Itanium LULW etc.

For right now, since I have decided, god dammit, these are at most 1500 bucks, I’m BUYING ONE ASAP, I need to test some things in theory. To do that I am going to beat the absolute piss, snot, shit, and childhood, out of my 2013 Mac Pro.

There’s this whole study going around about purposely engaging your creativity, funnily enough by people who look like they live the most drab flat colored lives ever, but the idea sticks sort of.

It’s the same thing that got Tyler The Creator where he is. But this isn’t the place to have an existential crisis.

The nMP, the tragic thing it is, surprisingly lines up at the Drag Strip pretty thoroughly with the BC-250.

These are…. Close. Annoyingly enough finding actual results that mean dick all is impossible so I guess I am buying every 2011 V0 V1 and V2 CPU and slamming them through benchmarks in my nMP, along side the video test.

Basically, because of my whole “Purposely Engaging Creativity” crap, I have a nonsensical amount of dependency on GPU power as much as CPU power. And with all my content output, I genuinely need the biggest video encoder box on the planet.

So before I get a BC-250, I need to somewhat test my idea. I need to make sure I couldn't put something better together with what I have, but really, because the benchmarks are SO close, I really want to get into the idea of how small the footprint really will be (3 BC-250's in the space of 1 nMP).

The nMP is going to use all 3 blades. The CPU, and each GPU. I’m going to leave the stock SSD from apple in there so the SMC can have absolutely 0 errors (I saw the log with the PCIe adapter SSD I had in there, holy shit the collisions). Either the machine will be running Windows 8.1, a heavily HEAVILY modded iso of the Windows 10 AME Alpha I still have (no I am not distributing it) that will tell me almost everything I need to know in its logging tools if any GPU driver problems occur, or I run linux and I pray to god that nothing explodes. No, OSX is not on the table.

The CPU will be pointed to an IceCast host somewhere and will be pushing a 5880X3440 canvas. You might think that this is ridiculous and kills the CPU, however even on the most intense encoder, it’s 2-6% at most in OBS. Each GPU will hold, or clone and downscale, the main canvas to a 1080P ish (1907p) image for YouTube, Twitch, TikTok, and…. Uh.... Idk… something, I can fit 4 streams on the nMP D300’s, and I wanna thermally smash it, but however that adds up blah blah whatever.

Basically the upgrade here is that you go from an nMP that’s kind of a turd because the D300 is a Sky500 or S7000 or some nonsense, and it bugs out because it expects a failure that isn’t there……VS RDNA2, Zen 2, a 7000MT/s friggin BUS.

AND 12 IN A BOX

Literally once I added all of this together I decided that I would keep my garbage Dell PS4000E SAN, stack it with a full 32TB of SSD’s, and when I get this BC-250 rack, hook the 2 together. Tada, throw my Dell R510 in the middle for a management box and you have a data center that’s about 3 feet tall.

Suck it Linus Tech Tips.

Welp I opened the thread and unfortunately now I’m not going to shut the fuck up because this has been boiling in my autistic little skull for 4 friggin days and I am going to absolutely explode.


The more I think about the amount of customization a BC-250 gives me, the more excited I get. Since its actually, like, modern modern, I can put the biggest SSD’s ever in each slice, if I can do a host bus cache that’s like 2GB, even with a DRAM cache, I genuinely think it would be vomitous.

My one huge huge hold up is the GPU and the CPU are BOTH on the exact same memory bus. While I am completely and totally down for that, I think a lot of people would end up thrown for a loop, and I think a 300 or 350 needs to start at 64GB at a minimum, just for compute space on the CPU, screw AI stacks. You could even put GDDR5 on it and I would probably survive.

Fuck it let me have 128GB GDDR 5 and let me partition it and overclock the ever living snot out of it in the bios.

If you have 2GB to the SSD cache, your GPU needs 2, 3, or 4 GB ram (I’m not one of these morons demanding to see the follicles on my anime waifu in-game), that leaves you with not very much for the system.

Part of me then thinks back to the Asus GPU’s that had an NVMe drive, and the Host Bus Memory swapping. If you had a DRAM Cache, what if you didn’t use it for the memory IOPS on the SSD, but for swap requests? IDK just a thonk. SSD uses the ram bus, vice versa the CPU / GPU has an active swap file on your PCIe 5/6 NVMe SSD.

Cough.

Since it’s a UDP pipeline, you HAVE to fill the space, no exceptions.

One single BC-250 is 80 bucks. Funnily enough an MI-25 is like 45 bucks (IDK how wtf is wrong with people help me). So, to test this garbage theory I shall be digging up a BC 250, and it will free stand boot using my Beast V7 GPU Dock for PCIe Power.

Also the BC-250 hits nearly the same CPU power as a 10 core intel chip, with 6 cores, and like 1/4th the cache, or less, per core. The entire system is almost the whole wattage of an overclocked 1680V3. The 4700S APU itself is half the TDP of the entire D300 equipped nMP, 220W to 450W.

When you take into account that thats with a shit NVME setup, not up to date drivers, on a 6 - 8 year old linux kernel most of the time, with the fact that the ram is GDDR6 and the whole bus is PCIE 4.... The footprint to compute to cost is insane and everyone needs to buy one of these god damn things right now and put a 12X rack in their basement. I'm not even close to joking.
 
It ocurred to me I can use my Beast GPU Dock V7 to freestand a BC250. Might try this since prices are all over the place.
 
Got an email from asrock. No pcie slot? I guess I didn't get a good look at the board by itself. However, now that that has bopped into currency, I had a thonk.

Its a 220W computer, could I power it with a GaN power supply? Then it occurred to me that I can do a BUNCH of them on a shelf and just cool it with like a box fan. Gotta find 280W GaN's but whoopdy do if Imma do it Imma do it right
 
Going to keep an eye out on listings and throw them in the ebay hole. Saw one for 40 bucks, these need to be looked at by hackers.
 
X8XFoundries Did you ever end up getting a BC-250? I've had one for awhile but never messed with it until the last couple days. I installed Bazzite and flashed the custom firmware that allows you to lower the memory allocated to the GPU (mine had defaulted to 4GB system RAM, 12GB GPU RAM) and installed the governor software everybody says to install in the BC-250 guides. GPU hardware acceleration seemed to work out of the box, I'm downloading some newer (made in the last 5 years or so lol) games now to test and see what the performance is like. Overall system performance seems relatively fine once I set the bios to free up some system RAM (4GB is pretty painful). I still need to plug it into a Killawatt and see what the idle and load power consumption is like.

Well damn 150$ shipped with a 128GB SSD. Buddy can print the case for me and just add a cheap 40$ flexATX. I think I will use this for my gaming Sim Rig. Mostly do Assetto Corsa and the other SIM Titles :)

They're definitely fun to play around with and still relatively inexpensive. Cooling can be a bit of a challenge, I had to open up some of the heatsink fins (they're all attached at the top since air is supposed to blow through the heatsink) and put a high CFM fan on top. There's probably better ways to do it than I did.

Also be aware that it can only game in Linux since there's no Windows GPU drivers, so you'll want to make sure the games you want to play work in Linux. It seems like there might be some tweaks needed to get Assetto Corsa running but that it should work - https://www.protondb.com/app/244210

sounds good. I will be running bazzite and thanks for the tip. has anyone tried to remove the heatsink from the board yet for repaste etc...
 
a few updates:

My Buddy is printing me the case. Fits Extremely well. got a 500 watt ITX PSU and a 14 pin to 24 pin female connection to jump it. Got some old school Sanyo GTs that are 4 pin I will run at 7 volts via an adapter. Will probally fiddle with it once my 24 pin comes in.
 
Post pics when you start assembling it, or after it's built. I would like to see how beautiful or fugly it looks. :p
 
This is probably the cleanest BC -250 build I've seen!

I wish I would have picked one up prior to the price hikes.
I have pivoted to a better case with better airflow. Will post pictures in a few days. It's about a 24 hour print in total on his printers

here is a near finally build. just need to enlarged the power button section. It does not fit my atx jumper and power seitch. Noctua redux 1300 rpm fans with custom temps/RPM set inside BIOS. at idle is basically silent.

I just ordered one of these to play with, I would ideally like to install Cachyos over Bazzite. I've been playing more with Cachyos recently on one of my spare rigs. It looks like the installation is fairly straight forward with the newest release. I'm seeing conflicting information out there about video decoding, some documentation says it's broken and other documentation states that it is fixed and does indeed work. This is important to me because I would like to use this to stream some titles through steam to my living room, any word from experience that this works well?

I can't get it to work on bazzite. moon light and sunshine work great. it appears to do it in software but cpu usage is still acceptable

Thanks for the info, I'm hoping I'll be able to play mostly everything natively instead of having to stream it (mostly couch games) this shouldn't struggle. Currently I'm running an HP mini PC with integrated graphics for streaming terminal, it obviously can't do much natively with Intel integrated graphics.

I believe encoding is fully broken. I was using my windows VM with a VGPU passed to it to render the games. I have not tested the BC-250 as the machine running sunshine and streaming from it.

Just got mine in the Mail, I haven't gotten a chance to power it up on the bench yet. Any chance your buddy would want to print out another one of those cases? Ebay prices on the printed cases seems a little steep for what you get. PETG would be fine, I don't need ABS. PM me if he is interested.

doesn't work for me, decoding a 2160p bluray rip uses about 75~80% CPU, so it would be amazing if someone could get it working... put together a little BC250 box as a livingroom PC

maybe? maybe not? people said the same thing about getting mesa to work on them, then about unlocking the gpu cu's etc... only things left really are unlocking the two CPU cores and hardware video encode/decode

Yeah, that was me. It works pretty well. Boots up right into a SteamOS looking frontend with Bazzite. You can hit the "power" button to go into desktop mode just like a Steam Deck (or Steam Machine I guess...not paying $1100 for one). Most things work fine.

No Wifi, so you have to source a usb wifi dongle that works with Bazzite (or just use the ethernet). I didn't get the extra cores to unlock using Bazzite, but that's more because I'm not Linux savvy per se. Bazzite is based on Fedora Atomic, so it's an immutable system, and the core unlock required a little system manipulation that I couldn't work around without more research.

Even so, it's pretty good for what it is. I got one with a case, fan, PSU, and 512GB SSD for $200. I had to buy a switch for my case, but now it works fine.
