Whats your favorite pc game of all time?

Hmmmmm. It really depends on the criteria I use to decide favorite.

BG2 is a contender for sure because it is one I still replay from time to time. Every couple years I'll get bit by the itch and say "Know what? I should replay it again." Not a lot of games that do that, and it is by far the longest running for that so strong contender.

However in terms of time spent playing it would be WoW. I quit over a decade ago, during Cataclysm, but man I played a LOT of WoW and enjoyed the hell out of it. No game before or since have I played as many hours, and I had some really good social times on it with friends. So while I don't like what it has become and don't play it any more, it is a contender for sure.

Yet another would be Subnautica. For me it was pretty much a one-and-done, I really don't have much urge to replay it but that first playthrough was magical. The magic of discover and the progress through the deep was just amazing. It was basically all I did for like a week and a half. I'd get off work, and just play it until bed. It just enraptured me in all the right ways. While it isn't something I come back to, because so much of it was the magic of discovery, it is the one game I most wish I could delete from my memory and enjoy for the first time again.

Starsiege: Tribes

Shazbot!

My best years gaming were my high school years playing with my Starsiege: Tribes (and Tribes Demo) clan: (KV) Kamikaze Vipers. I've been involved in other gaming communities since then, but Tribes will always hold a special place.

Hard to pick just one, unless I narrow to a specific genre.

For the classics: BG1 and 2. Command & Conquer was my first foray into modding, scripting new missions. Core memories for sure. Sim City, because why not?

Modern times: The Witcher 3 for single player, Fallout: New Vegas is a close second. Ghost Recon: Wildlands, for Co-op.

I’m having a lot of fun playing Arc Raiders. Counter Strike is up there also.

Sorry just too many good games to have a favourite. :sorry:

I don't really have a favourite of anything. Off the top of my head HL + mods (cs/dod), FF7(PS1) + V + IX, WOW up to Mists, Icewind Dale, Little Nightmares, Yazkua 0, Ghost of Tsushima, Mass Effect, Day of the Tentacle, AC Black Flag(original) + Rogue, Bioshock, Batman: Arkham City (2011), The Last of Us (PS3), Killzone 3, Uncharted, Fez, GTA4, Mafia 2, God of War (PS2), Tie Fighter, Doom (dos), Heroes of Might and Magic 3, Overwatch (pre 2022), Starcraft, Diablo 2, Warcraft 2, Alien Isolation, KQ5, SQ4, Painkiller, Stray, Destiny, Quake 2, Shadow Tactics, Ni No Kuni, A Plague Tale, Portal, Dishonored, Chrono Trigger, Days Gone, Tekken, The Walking Dead (telltale), Zelda Breath of the Wild, Resident Evil 4 (Wii), Donkey Kong Country 2, Killer Instinct, F.E.A.R, Machinarium, Dragon Age Origins etc etc etc. Missing plenty.

As long as you have this love of gaming, you’ll never be bored or lonely.

Zork, Pitfall, Asteroids, Commander Keen, Castle Wolfenstein, Doom, Star Wars X-Wing, Diablo 1, Half Life, Path of Exile.

Pick one, they all were part of my love for PC gaming.

I don't have as many hours in it compared to Doom, but Quake has to be #1 for me. I would have loved id to have given it the Doom 2016 treatment before being gutted . The Lovecraftian aesthetic with modern graphics and gameplay refinements would have been amazing.

It's new and multi-platform, but probably Elden Ring. The sheer scope of that game is nuts. The fact that they successfully took a Dark Souls game and put it in a world with TES-level scale makes me giddy.
If we're going old school and such, probably Baldur's Gate 2 or the original Quake with all the zany mods people used to play online.

If hours are any indicator, most likely Unreal Tournament 99' and UT2004. I played those games daily for years. After that, probably Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (Original) and then Destiny 2. If hours are the metric. I probably have 4,000 hours in D2. That said, I'd probably still rank Cyberpunk 2077 and Mass Effect 2 among my favorites of all time as well.

As a kid it was Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis. As a young adult it was UT2004. Now a days its probably Remnant 2.

I'd have to say for me, most likely, the original Farcry. It's kinda what started me along the path and made me want to get more involved with pc's and upgrading/modding and what not. Seeing Farcry run at 1280x1024 with my Radeon 9800pro and Athlon 64 3200+ was mind blowing. Up until that point I was playing Playstation1/2 games on standard def tv's and had been doing so prior for a long time since the atari days. The clarity of the visuals alone was a game changer. I've been pc gaming exclusively since 2003 starting with the original Call of Duty and Halo, lol @ the Halo part:D. I actually remember the last console game I played, it was The Suffering: The ties that Bind in early 2004 (I think it was actually Feb or March iirc) on PS2. Going from that shit to things like Doom3, Farcry, UT2004 and CoD on a HD monitor,...there was no going back to that crap...ever :).

I guess if I was nailed down, BG1/2/TOB remastered which I treat as a unit, since you can export your party throughout.

Stellaris has a lot of play time, as does Civilization 2-6.

Fallout 1-2 were pretty awesome, as well as New Vegas. Along with these, playing Wasteland as a kid.

I used to play the hell out of WoW but got burned out to a husk with that game, no desire to ever play again in any form.

For newer games, Cyberpunk 2077.

I honestly don't know if i can answer this one. So many metrics to choose from in my mind. If i go by time played, it would be Everquest or Hearthstone(still daily since beta). But I wouldnt say they are my favorite games ever, maybe Space Quest 3? Super fond nostalgic memories of that one. Quake 3 Arena would be up there for all the time spent at LANs and online competitive playing. Generic answers would be FF7, Witcher 3, CP2077, all great in their own right, but not sure if fave all time as I don't really replay them. After thinking through it I guess I would have to say Mass Effect(trilogy) and Yakuza series are probably my fave games overall.

Baldur's Gate 1, 2, TOB as a single game via EET modification would be my favorite of all time. Final Fantasy 7 may have provided a slightly better experience on the first play but it's replay value died quickly where Baldur's Gate has been fun to replay for 20 years. Cyberpunk is my favorite game of the last 10 years and I consider it the last "real" game experience that I have had.

Too hard to pick just one. I’ll go by genre:

FPS: Wolfenstein 3D, Spear of Destiny, Doom, Doom 2, Hexen, Quake 2, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Wolfenstein Enemy Territory

Racing: Need for Speed High Stakes, Test Drive 5, Carmageddon, Carmageddon 2, Test Drive Unlimited 2, Wreckfest

Adventure: Quest for Glory 1-3, Betrayal at Krondor

Strategy: Civilization 4, Colonization (1994)

Space Combat: Wing Commander, Wing Commander 2, Wing Commander Privateer, the X-Wing / TIE Fighter series

I’m sure there are others, but this is a pretty good list to work with.

Unreal Tournament 1999. I still play maps I created myself back in the day. With bot pathing, full lighting & sounds. Play on a Win98 voodoo 4 system built from parts I've had since back then. The weapons were not overly balanced like UT 2004.

So hard to pick a single game as some older games that were outstanding at the time of release still hold up reasonably well in the gameplay, but graphics and mechanics are very outdated. My favorite game of all time wasn't available on PC until well over a decade after it's release so I will not count it as a PC game. I will cheat a bit though and split it into single player and multiplayer and split single player by decade.

Single player:
  • 1990s - Tie Fighter Collector's CD-Rom
  • 2000s - Knights Of The Old Repulic (KOTOR)
  • 2010s - Mass Effect 2
  • 2020s - Cyberpunk 2077
Multiplayer: Tied between CS and Quake 3/Quake live. So many hours in both as they have enormous amount of depth and very high skill ceiling. Always something you can do slightly different to achieve a better outcome, shooting mechanics can always be improved a tiny bit etc.

My overall favorite game is Final Fantasy X, but I consider that to be a PS2 game with remasters on other platforms. Should be noted that CP 2077 and Mass Effect 2 come close to FF X as I absolutely love those games.

I don't do favorites but I'll try to narrow it down to a reasonably small list...

Kings Quest (2 & 5)
Wing Commander series (1 through Prophecy)
Magic Carpet 1&2
Mech Warrior 2 / Mercenaries
Warcraft 2
Fallout 2
Diablo
Half-Life 2
F.E.A.R.
Max Payne 1&2
Mass Effect (1-3)
Skyrim
Dark Souls
The Witcher 3
Divinity: Original Sin II
Cyberpunk 2077
Crimson Desert

Ultima Online Destard Dungeon taming long story short I was out of work in 1997 so instead of looking for a job I went to Best Buy in Green Bay I picked up this Ultima Game.
I remember my brothers friend talking about it with his Tandy 2000 just the single player games. I was floored how good the game was. 2-D sprites at it's best.

A lot of multiplatform titles being mentioned here. I took the spirit of the thread to mean games made for PC. Some games I think the PC version is unique enough to count, like the Mass Effect games.

It took me most of a summer vacation to complete the game. Ultima IV. By about half way through, I could read the runic language. There were no online hints back then, graph paper and notepad.

Definitely Starsiege: Tribes with Renegades Mod. That experience has never been matched for me. We can get a yearly shit pile a.k.a. Call of Duty but we can't get a single new (good) Tribes game in over 25 years.
