No Man's Sky - a procedurally generated sand box space exploration game

Well I put the game down a week or so back, and of course this pops up. I have never participated in an expedition but maybe this time I will.

Swarm Expedition Update

View: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2NomizORoqU

Looks like the limited time Expedition comes with new 'Direwasp' armor, 'Hive of Glass' space star ship encounter, drone dogfights, research opportunities, new flightpack, on planet drone fights, intra-player rivalry, team themed posters and flags, direwasp multitool, etc.

Seems players will be added to: the royal, the sage, and the weaver teams with only one getting the counter-swarm to work.

On the urging of a coworker I fired up a new save for the Swarm Expedition. Figured I haven't explored this aspect of the game so may as well.

The scramble progress from nothing to something was not bad. The various sub-section rewards for the expedition really helped speed up the process.

Oh, and I am a fancy pants Royal.

I was pretty impressed by the numbers. In the span of an hour about 6,000 more users signed in and were distributed.

I believe I am at the early part stopping point so missions are time locked and waiting for each collective to accumulate. I may grind a bit more for an A or S freighter and get that shored up.

I was pretty lucky to snag an S class fighter in the middle of all of this.

One thing I am not super keen on is just the litter of base builds people are leaving everywhere. Most almost right on top of various railed mission points. So it goes.

The new multitool for it looks pretty swanky and the space combat with swarms is at least something different.

If it gets bad on a quest point with the bases etc. just turn off multiplayer in the settings and get the quest done. Can turn it back on after that. I had to turn it off for the garbage trucking expedition.

Thanks for the tip. I'll do that. I am not planning on playing with any randos at the moment.

A little warning for anyone who is playing the Swarm expedition and gets the "head to planet X and dig up three swam pieces and destroy them" mission. It turns out if you switch off of the terrain manipulator tool - or get in your ship - the count of how many you removed resets and generally messes up the area. It would be be to head to space, pulse around the planet, and land somewhere else to start again. Took me a bit of time to recognize that issue.

These numbers are just wild in terms of the dedicated effort by one group even with the timed cool down for the missions.

I jump back in for all the expeditions and am enjoying it. Ended up on team Weavers. Getting to the point of doing the 3 community missions, once per 8 hours, is pretty easy and can be done in one sitting. At this point I’m trying to jump on after work and do one off each of those per day if possible.

Anyone who has the game I encourage you to hop in!

Indeed. Depending on the roll of the dice for mission types I can typically knock out all three in about 25ish minutes.

The only one giving me trouble is the 'peel of parts from the drone'. That grabber tool is super duper finicky for one of the internal parts every darn time. That or my brain smooths out when it shows up.

On the plus side I never really used the pulse spitter in my normal play and a sup'ed up version of that really does a number on the purple corrupted sentinels that show up.

I'm fighting for the Royals also. It's funny doing missions the second they are released, all the objective zones are complete madhouses.

I took the advice and turned off the 'multiplayer' bit so I don't see anyone. I may turn it on to take a gander at the swarm of people, but lordy the bases (while mostly hidden) are still a PITA. A few times I've taken off from a spot and the ship was struggling to get off the ground. It would flash the base that is hidden to me but there and trying to sort out the collision detection.

As I say, that maybe that's the point of the expedition? While we fight the external swarm the real threatening swarm was in us the whole time. Ahab and such. hahaha

Thankfully I finally found a decent freighter so I can have my infinite distance item transfers. As luck would have it this squid showed up. I haven't found one in my regular save so bought that dang thing as well.

I believe that if you leave MP on and you encounter a base blocking an objective you can report it (at the base computer? IDK) then save/reload and it makes the base disappear to you. I haven't needed to try it yet, but I read it somewhere. Might work might not.

Has anyone used the 'crossplay' functionality in NMS? Does it work well?

A buddy just picked up the game and I think after he gets himself orientated I wouldn't mind checking out that quasi multiplayer option to tool around with him.

I am figuring joint derelict freighter missions might be fun, or some of the anomaly missions might be interesting to duo.

I used to do freighter runs with a random I met online years ago, but the NMS multiplayer functionalities are convoluted in my eyes so I find it more relaxing to play solo usually. And yes I have crossplay on, it's no different than regular MP. Make sure you warp to the holy grail freighter to do runs though and do the unlimited detector glitch.

This bug still exists sadly.

This may be fixed on the PC version. I just finished another one of these types of 'dig up X number of pieces', and after getting one my scanner was all "you gotta trot a long way". So I jumped in my ship and flew a bit in the general direction, set down, and my count of having 1 done was still there. Granted I didn't switch off my terrain gun so that maybe a thing.

Another oddity of this expedition is if I am doing a 'hack the node' mission where you give a node nanites, a circuit board, or 300 whatevers of powder. A week or two back I had an issue where the node to fix was an exosuit pod. So I repaired and it and nothing. No prompt to save the node or what have you. It turns out if your suit has all the slots opened you cannot progress further. So I abandoned the mission, and did the other two, but couldn't complete it.

I may have been a dumb-dumb as I got another one this afternoon and it seems if I abandon the mission, take the mission back on, fly to another system, and the game gives me a chance to hack something I can. Granted it served up three more exosuit ones until I got there, but I did. I am not certain if I could have done that a few weeks back but at least it's an option now.

I found a great planet for nanite and unit farming, the best I've found by my own exploration probably. Made a water base since the terrain isn't too pretty and have made a lot of nanites already.

-3 star economy
-Gentle biome
-Dissonant with lots of inverted mirrors and radiant shards for nanite refining
-Titan worms for easy nanites (and it's somewhat flat, not mountainous like so many are)
-Frequent gravity storms making travelling on planet very fast, especially from worm to worm which are on average 220-300 units apart.

Well I am just a big ol' dumb-dumb. All this time I never completed the Atlas story or Artemis story lines, but apparently doing that unlocks this whole 'autophage' story line I never knew existed. I thought they were just broken robots with bits to take off. Nooooooooooope.

Can you even get to purple systems yet then? If not that's hilarious, they are where the fun planets are.

There are PURPLE SYSTEMS?! See, in my defense I would let about four or five updates pile up, skim the most recent and go oh, neato - derelict raiders or schmokeymon battles or what not. Get them, get the missions, and go forth. A few times I just started from scratch and went on my merry way. I never really looked too hard at all the updates as they piled up so yeah.. seems I have some gaps in them.

Plus I am not a big consumer of NMS youtube/reddit content. I honestly thought I was just dogbuns with the RNG for planets, and long running missions like the Atlas shenanigans were just easy to not do.

If not that's hilarious,
Pretty much me, right now.

Those quest lines aren't much fun in my opinion. The grind to open up the stargate/portal things is, annoying to say the least. I'd forgotten about the purple planet thing. I can't remember if I did that during an expedition or not.

ugh yes it was such a slog to go through.

Binged the whole "purple system unlock" quest line yesterday. I have to say - lore wise it was a nice addition given the nature of the game world and what not. Nothing super tedious but insightful.

Now I have a whole new slew of planets to look at, and maybe I will make one of them underwater bases to go ocean lookie-lou'ing.

Of course I have to wonder what else am I missing, but so itgoes.

Once it's unlocked can't you just keep jumping systems and it gives you a symbol each time? I got through it quickly IIRC, but yea it was kind of boring.

Yeah, I remember learning that after a bit of finding the images of travellers or whatever.

Make one of your next grinds to find a natural S class Interceptor. I've been searching camps for weeks looking for one. I have one I Nanite upgraded, but I hear that naturals have on average better base stats. Claim every ship you find regardless, they are worth 22 (C class) to 42.5 (A class) million units each when scrapped.

Also make your own S class staff in the wild. My best so far had ~4,400 base damage IIRC.

I know you can use Reddit to find the best of the best easy, but I'm doing everything natural on this playthrough except freighter upgrade.

Oh that's been my grind since day one. I never quite had the coin to upgrade ship classes to everything has been natural finds. I would like an S-class freighter so that's on the list, my trusty 'chaffed nut' exotic S is nice but time to get off that horse and find a new ride.

The best I've gotten with the interceptor is A and does the whole wings fold out and what not when it lands.

Though I think I found a purple "deep water" planet so I may try my hand at a base and squid fights or what ever the heck is lurking in the deep.

Gonna give this one another try, can't say no to all these free updates

Any general advice? My gameplay preference is to avoid having to do too much resource grinding
Probably preferring exploration over complicated base building
I might also only be playing it co-op not single player

I think I'm going to have to pick this up soon... Lol.
I recommend it. I'm glad I finally gave this game a chance.after bouncing off at two or three times. It's pretty g****** impressive. I'm still a complete newbie about 12 hours in so still learning the absolute basics, but it's quite a feast, especially at maximum.visual settings. Even though its casual, flight feels pretty good too.

Economy farming then. Buy as much as you can afford of the system's trading good then warp to the system that buys them at the highest price - sell and buy all theirs. While you are buying also grab all of the resources the system offers from the terminal (ferrite, radon, gold, etc.) If you want to add more steps to each stop you can check for easy missions and I would also suggest checking both multi-tool boxes for S class spawns. If you find S class you can go to a planet, save, reload game, then go back to the space station and cross your fingers for a rare tool (like experimental.) After you get bored with that switch to interceptor farming once you can get to dissonant planets.

Well, this Weaver did only one sabotage mission that was required for the expedition quest. I did a couple of quests yesterday to help with the cause but it has been very casual overall the past two weeks.

Well.. that was an interesting ending if not a little tepid. The final battle was a little confusing, but once the spires were kicked it was just chipping away at the main hull.

The armor glow up was nice.

There were some amusing messages at the final planet. Clearly not in the first wave to get there.

Yeah the ending was, an ending. I accidentally flew into a freighter that was nearby and being attacked by the swarm. Let me recharge my shields easily. At least I got to use my infra-knife on the death beams when the photons were best against the swarm packs. Got the new body armor set and kept my rando head the game gave me at the start of the expedition.

Amusingly it's was a little odd hiccup in the morning routine. I didn't spend 15 minutes slapping the three expedition missions while waking up and before logging into to work. Cest la vie.

Well.. lesson learned for my first expedition. I started a new save for the Swarm Expedition and it seems I cannot transfer my goods back to my primary save. If I would have started the expedition branched off my primary save I would be able to funnel goods back to that save when done.

Cest la vie. I'll just have to find a new squid ship. I mean, how hard can that be? ha!

The problem with using your main save, you can get locked into the expedition until you finish it. This one was time gated so you were stuck not playing your main save for a couple of months.
