[XDA] Someone made an E-ink Gameboy

That’s very cool, but the authors obsession with this one point…

“Because the screen renders at 60Hz, playing games on the Paper Boy is actually very feasible”

I thought I was going crazy in my advanced old age of 45, so I googled it. And it seems that many modern youthful gamers now consider 60 fps to be unplayable for any type of gaming at all.

I think that's notable, mostly because eink displays typically refresh very slowly unless a custom controller is used, and because the gameboy screen refreshed at (nearly) 60Hz. So achieving that speed was important for an authentic experience, and so you don't have that jarring flash from screen swaps that you usually get on eink.

Not only that, but on my ebook reader the eink screen also needs a full refresh with completely black screen once every 15 pages, to prevent ghosting.

I saw a few articles about eink refresh rates recently; apparently the OEM drivers are just unoptimized garbage, just performant enough to be used as a label in a store. But it seems like you can do a lot better, apparently, if you are the kind of person who understands voltage waveforms and stuff.
