Sony plans to stop production of Phyical games in 2028

Can't say I'm overly surprised, felt like things were headed in this direction.

I wonder if retail codes will be one time use (killing the resale market).

I am not surprised either but I though we would get one more generation of physical disc's. Retail codes will 100% be one time use. It is one of the main reasons for 200% digital. Kill the used/renters market completely. No doubt MS will also follow soon. GameStop won't survive the decade.

Brutal news. This eliminates any chance of their next console having a disk option then. And likely the same for the next Xbox. Nintendo will be the only console supporting physical games now, and even that is somewhat limited with their game key-cards that are essentially transferable license keys only.

It wouldn't be so bad if they developed some kind of system to allow us to transfer/sell our licenses somehow. Even they make it a bad value with transfer fees, the option would be nice.

Nintendo will follow after the S2 no doubt maybe even before like Sony.

Quite possible they will. Which would be horrible because it goes against the very nature of being able to play a portable console completely offline; you buy a physical game in a store while traveling or something, put it into your console and play with zero download necessary. I think they know the importance of it, but are trying to transition us with the game key cards. Their justification is that some games are too big and/or cost prohibative for their new cart media, but I think they could compromise on it by using the old/cheaper Switch 1 cart media with slower speeds but more storage and just force you to install it onto local storage to play it. Kinda like Sony and MS do already supporting game storage on large external HDD drives.

Going to take a ball park guess that the PS6 will come with an anaemic 1TB storage. And if they're feeling generous they'll also offer a 2TB model. (Digital only should really come with 4TB). It also wouldn't surprise me if they don't even offer an external disc drive with backwards compatibility.

You want the PS6 to cost $3k? It is already going to be expensive with current ram and storage prices. It wouldn't surprise me if it came with a 512gb drive lol.

That's why I said there would be a 1TB model. Or are you suggesting it should be a 250GB model to cut costs? They should probably supply 2 M2 slots for the PS6 as well.

Seriously. Their best move would be put small storage on it, and give it a slot or two for expansion.

They are definitely going to cut down the amount of storage and ram from their original plans.

But then they cant upsell you on a larger capacity.. I mean they could just include a USB 3.2 40Gbps port or something and let anyone use their own..

I am sure they will just use standard NVMe drives like the PS5.
Probably. That’s the part of me that likes digital games. My ps5 pro came with 2tb. I put a 2tb nvme in it as well and a 4tb usb ssd for ps4 games. Nice just having all that at my fingertips which is what steam got me used to haha

That's what I'm expecting and has been one of the best aspects of Sony hardware over Xbox hardware the past couple of gens. I just hope they go with a 2280 size and not a 2230 (or worse 2241) for their handheld.

Let's see if the internet outrage will force Sony to backtrack on this.

It might - I could see Sony at least offering the disc drive as an optional add-on like they do currently with the Pro.

I figured this was coming. I did not think the PS6 would offer a disc. I assumed they would continue discs until the release of the PS6 though. I can see why. It saves cost/size for the console itself in a time with rising hardware costs and they can save time not worrying about it. And the main reason, it will kill off used games.

Doubting it. Even if they do offer a disc drive, if few games offer discs anymore who will buy it?

A big part of the appeal of PS5 and Series X for me, was backwards comparability with higher resolution and better performance in PS4 and Xbox one games. I have a large library of disc based games and quite a few of those are games I might replay in the future or racing games that don't lose their appeal. Also there are some games that I've taken a break from that are fun, but too long, that I might finish in the future. They would need to build quite a good library of exclusives if I couldn't enjoy old favorites and racing games in higher resolution on a PS 6.

I do revisit games from time to time. E.g. I've probably played all the uncharted games at least 2 times, lost count on the number of times on Final Fantasy X over the years etc.

I would definitely buy a disc drive along with the console. Not having a disc drive would severely limit the appeal of a PS6 for me as probably 50% of my PS5 and 80% of my PS4 library would become unavailable. The PS 6 would be made compatible with the current add on drive in a perfect world so I could just move my drive over to the PS 6.

Microsoft should use this as an opportunity to win back lost customers for their next Xbox by keeping the disc drive (or introducing physical tradable keys like the switch 2), and then troll Sony hard over it. The irony would be off the charts and the goodwill would easily win players back. But I don’t see them doing something like that.

Although it leaves room for Nintendo to try competing with a more powerful (200-390w?) switch 2 pro and marketing that it still has physical games.

They won't. They want this also.

85% in 2026, would we look at ps5 only and not ps4 could be high, consummer have spooken quite loudly on that one.

Would probably be quite hollow, gamers giving the full option between the 2 with sony are overwhelming prefering digital and kind of forcing the industry hand here, like they did in the 2000s on PC.

Am I just an old guy shaking my fist at clouds, or do kids truly have as much fun looking at which games to buy scrolling through a digital storefront as I did going and looking at a wall of cover arts and rack of games to rent from the local movie store?

But I suppose people shouldn't be surprised by this. PC games have been fully digital download for about 20 years now. I think Dragon Age in 2009 was the last game I bought that actually ran from the disc, and even at that time it was rare.

With the quantity of information about a game available, including video reviews/streamers playing it and so on, giant word of "mouth" via social media and online users reviews the poster/cover art/newspaper review quote/star names for movies or games are not what it used to be for sure.

There is something about going into a physical store to choose or kids having an actual gift under the tree with Zelda as a cartridge in the box for sure, there is also something into having a very small amounts of games instead of our giants near free library of too many choice, that make you keep with it and appreciate it more.

We go with convenience quite often, force the industry into that choice, but it is not necessarily because we actualy loved it more, it was just easier.

I would be angry with this, but until games stop pandering and become fun again, I'm alright with it.
I have a rather large collection of physical games, from nes to ps5, and I have a whopping total of 12 ps5 games, out of over 1,300 games in my collection.

I'll be fine, I have plenty of games to last me for the rest of my life.

Console gamers buy digital 95% vs 5% physical. Gamers want this.. They voted with there wallet.. I don't understand the crying and backlash lol.

If you want to see the direction a Console is going... Look at where the PC was 10 years ago.

Because people like to be outrage when ever a big company makes anti-consumer even if they never buy physical. It is just a very small but extremely loud minority. I prefer physical and hate this personally and I am not screaming my head off about it.

Making up numbers doesn't make them true

clowns are using ps4 data to twist narratives lol. ps4 started as a physical disc system..

ps5 is mainly digital sales only.. Look it up for yourself lol.

ps6 will be only digital.. Not surprising... Like i said look at PC 10 years ago.. Thats usually the route consoles go. PC is the trend setter for consoles.
