What exactly happened to 3dfx??

I had an original Voodoo, but switched over to GeForce 1 & 2.

I still have a dead Hercules Kyro II lying around my house somewhere though. I loved that card until it died. I remember I got it by trading my GF2 MX for it (it beat the MX on most everything, and he needed a low profile card for an SFF).

I think that was an STMicroelectronics chipset, which was bought by 3dfx before it died (like my Kyro II), so this is kind of on topic.

Most of the design team that were working on Rampage (the successor to the VSA-100 line) were transferred to the team working on what has since become the GeForce FX series.

i noticed this from wiki :p

Gotta wonder if 3DFX really had the ability to run 4x FSAA with almost no performance hit and if so why does nvidia not try to implement it...

Btw anyone seen the shots of HL2 running on 3DFX over at www.3dfxzone.it? Game doesn't look nearly as bad as DOOM 3 on a 3DFX...

Well it was originally a Glide/Software only game till they patched it to include OpenGL but till this day, OpenGL in Tribes 1 is buggy as hell.

I don't think nVidia would have done so good without the 3dfx technological intellect.
*wipes off dust from Voodoo Banshee then puts it back into the box*
From times to times I still go back to my P1(200 mhz, 96 ram), for some good old Nfs2 and Quake 2 Chaos, damn those were the days. Don't forget SLI Voodoos>anything !1

wish i had one of those cards and some of those games...

:D but i bet i can beat all of you in terms of old tech. i've got a tandy trs-80 series iii coco... and it still works. plays a mean game of eagles & monuments too.

3DFX was the way! If you were an original EQ or Tribes player you NEEDED a 3DFX card. I still have my voodoo 3 3000 somewhere around here I think, god I loved it. May 3DFXrest in piece, they gave us the best during those tough times.
Yeah dude! I played EQ on a 200mhz Pentium Pro machine and just a Voodoo 3 and it ran so smooth and looked so nice. Then Kunark came along and fucked everything up =(

glide + turok 2 = greatness. 3dfx were pioneers in 3d graphics. Unfortunately they just stuck to old ways. At the end it was just 3dfx and Nvidia. ATI was around but they made lower quality entry level cards. When Nvidia bought 3dfx a lot of people Nvidia was not going to have any competition. Then came ATI from what seems nowhere.

my first 3d vid card was the good old voodoo 1. It was a canopus I believe. It's still lying around somewhere and last tome I checked still worked.

The architecture in the Doom3 on Voodoo 5 wasnt that bad but the models are horrible. Still kinda funny that those cards have such a positive following... better than the ati/nvidia !!!!!!age we got going on all over the net nowadays

My first 3D card was a Banshee. After I installed the card and played a few games I thought to myself, I should invest in this company right away. Boy was I wrong. After the company was bought out, I had my shares sent to me as a souvenir.

I had a voodoo 5 5500 agp. Card was awesome back in 2000. Played everything fine. D2 was a treat.

Still have my Diamond Monster 3D II 12 MB. It's a Voodoo2. Not sure if it still works though.

The funny thing is that I never owned a 3dfx card even though I was envious at times: I went straight from Rendition (I was playing 3D-accelerated Quake before you Voodoo owners) to ATI and NVIDIA. To abuse car analogies, it's as if I skipped the Model T.

I was a filthy 3dFX owner and had to just settle for running NASCAR Racing with -h for high res software rendering because it only supported Rendition.

never tried speedy3d/RRedline once in my life... did it had a little feel/look to it like glide had ? I think glide was handling lighting, fog, gradiant and filter a bit differently than the rest.

Apparently they did had a look of their own has well.

I remember a few games being like that... it was glorious, even if very short-lived.

I only owned voodo 2 in SLI as far as 3dfx goes, had a rendition verite v1000 prior, which did 2d also, went to Voodoo2s in next build then to a Geforce. Still, good old days.

Had my voodoo2 single and then went to voodoo3 3500, after that went to some form of geforce i cant remember.

What memories. Owned Voodoo I, two Voodoo II, Voodoo Banshee and Voodoo 3 3000. Wish I'd never have sold them.
