No USB C Audio Unless I use my HDMI Port on PC

Hi all, I have a Gigabyte X870E AORUS ELITE WIFI7 ICE. It comes with two USB 4 Display port video. The motherboard also has a HDMI audio but sadly it taps out at Dolby Atmos. I can't get DTS-X on it like I would if I plugged my Q990F soundbar to my graphics card.

I would plug in my Q990F to my RTX 4090 but the 4090 can only handle 3 displays which I already have. So I figured I try USB 4 with a USB C to HDMI cable. The USB 4 when plugged in shows me DTS-X and Dolby Atmos on my Windows sound settings but selecting either of these two options won't give me any sound to my soundbar. The only way I get sound is when I select default Windows sound profile with no spatial sound so no DTS-X or Dolby Atmos.

The one weird work around I discovered is that I have to plug in a display to my Motherboard's HDMI port as well to get my USB 4 port to play audio in Atmos or DTS-X. But it defeats the purpose because I want my displays all and only on my graphics card and the soundbar to use my USB 4 port. I'd like to not have two inputs from my PC going into one display. Any idea why this is happening and what I can do to fix it?

when using the usb 4 does it show the licenses as active?

k. the usb and hdmi audio must be tied, when theres no video output the audio dumbs down. i wonder if one of these would work to keep the dtsx/atmos enabled.

Woah, bro, what is that? Looks interesting but what is it? And its a little funny you say the "needs a video output" because the Q990F does show up as a display. I can change the resolution. But I guess it somehow knows it's not a monitor? Idk.

its a fake monitor contained in an hdmi dongle(?). they are usually used for remote desktop access where theres no monitor connected. it will keep the hdmi port outputting a display signal so that the audio will work, hopefully.

These things are basically dummy displays. Has an edid rom to say its a display, might do whatever else to sync, and drops the bitstream on the floor.

Can be super handy for convincing computers to do what you want, when what you want isn't mainstream.

That sound bar has a bunch of HDMI ports. I didn't study the docs thoroughly but it sounds like it can do pass-through 4k 120Hz and supports HDMI ARC. Any chance you can use some of that with your displays? You've got 3. If one is a TV with HDMI ARC out you could perhaps run audio through the TV to the sound bar, and it sounds like the sound bar can be in-between a video source and the display. No idea what you're running for displays but you might be able to chain the sound bar with a display & run everything off your vid card.

Also, are you sure your 4090 can only do 3? I had 4 running off a 3090 for a while, then moved to a 5090. My setup had a 4k OLED for gaming, then a work setup with a 43" 4k IPS screen and a couple of 24" 1920x1200 IPS side screens in portrait mode. Then 2 weeks ago my 43" 4k IPS work screen died. Replacement Dell U5226KW arrived yesterday but of course one of the cables is too short and I'm still thinking about side screens so we'll see what I end up with. At any rate my point is I've run 4 screens off a 3090 and a 5090 and if your 4090 can't run 3 plus a sound bar I'm thinking it probably has something to do with the sound bar not being a monitor or TV.

I wouldn't say it has a bunch, it has two inputs and an out/passthrough (eARC). That's definitely how I would hook it up, unless you have another source using the eARC input, then if you can I would connect the display to that source instead.
