Half Life 3 in the works?

Gabe was always waiting for the next big technological advancement in gaming...if HL3 is coming soon then I wonder what that innovation turns out to be...can't be ray-tracing...Gabe reminds me of James Cameron who always felt that the current technology was not up to par with his vision...only when he designed new 3D cameras and new ways of shooting underwater and motion capture did he agree to make Avatar 2/3/4/5

VR, HDR, Ray/Path Tracing, 8k displays. That’s just on the GPU side. Current gen APIs are MUCH better at leveraging multi-core CPUs providing far better AI and physics models. There’s been a ton of new tech since HL2 EP2

It’s a bit shocking to me to see people calling Half-Life 2 overrated. I guess to each their own.
For a linear FPS it isn't bad, but I loathe the airboat. That sequence takes entirely too long. Also these days, the scripting is obvious and can get quite annoying. I was kind of enjoying myself when I was playing through it again for the 20th anniversary, but dropped it after Ravenholm.

Would be cool if there was character selection and you could play a different story line as father Grigori.

I never experienced the game even though I own copy of each I played a good 5 minutes. The thing is LCDs came out the same time but they had cfl backlught which were horrible to my vision. I think I was playing more Dark Age of Camelot at he time this game came out there were no Hard copies at Walmart. I didn't get to gaming seriously again my 3000xp Amd was dated had to buy a PS3 slim was playing Borderlands and Bioshock instead. My first Valve game was Left for Dead actually bought a Hard Copy.

That surprised me, too, but if you want to get pedantic, anything that gets as much hype and reverance as HL2 is overrated, no matter how good it is. After being told for years that HL2 is manna from heaven projected onto a screen, you finally play it and… well, it’s a video game! An FPS from the mid-2000s, to be precise. Impressive and well-put-together, but not some transcendant experience unless you played it when it was new and you were still young and ready to invest yourself so deeply into a game. People who don’t fit that profile will almost inevitably be disappointed, even though it’s not the game’s fault.

when people call a game transcendent or groundbreaking they are referring to the time it was released...of course if you're playing it for the first time in the past few years you're not going to see what made it so special...for its time it was a groundbreaking game

Tom?

At this point I think hl3 will have to be nothing short of amazing, because a lot of current gamers weren't even alive when hl2 came out and most probably haven't played the series.

Nah. Even in 2004 it was kind of mediocre overall compared to other games that released that year like Far Cry, Doom 3, Escape From Butcher Bay. It wasn't even the first game to use the Havok physics engine, so I was always confused why people were gushing over the use of physics. Maybe it was one of the first to apply it to a lot of the world objects and clutter? It wasn't even the first full DX9 game. The most impressive thing for the time was the facial animations.

I really enjoyed HL2 when it launched even with the flaws and oddities. Last time I played it, I still enjoyed it. They did a lot of nice subtle things to make the world feel more functional and immersive. Similar to Alyx, the "game" is not much, but the experience was really really enjoyable. I loved the OG Far Cry and other games of the time but none were perfect. People have a preference and for some, HL2 wasn't it.

Tend to agree with this. I played it on release, but found it inferior to the first game, which I loved. Guess it was the fact that it went from being a Sci-Fi shooter with a groundbreaking presentation to becoming more of a horror game with gimmicky puzzles to show off the physics.

Started it several times, never made it past Ravenholm.

The facial animations at the time were seriously impressive, and that probably carried a lot of that weight, but what other games utilized physics like say the gravity gun at that time? I was definitely impressed by it back then.

HL2 definitely didn’t rock me though, and like most of us agree the boat shit was trash. I was way more into the original. Black Mesa is the way to enjoy HL atm, I ran through it a year or two ago and had a lot of fun. HL3 would need to bring something seriously impressive to the table to be successful, I’m guessing lord gaben knows this. That said I did really enjoy Alyx, but it wasn’t massive.

You guys are really trashing on HL2.

I don't agree that it was mediocre, it was a great game. I do agree it was overrated though.

Graphics were good but not the best. It didn't have the highest level of detail or the best lighting. The performance to graphical detail was good but not the best either. The one thing it did do the best was facial animations.
Physics were good but other games had just as good of physics. The thing HL2 did was make them integral to the gameplay. It was supposed to be more of a thinking mans FPS with puzzles to solve.
The story, setting , and voice acting were all very good. And the game overall was great in every way apart from the vehicles. The vehicles were probably the only thing that wasn't great.

But what I think matters most:
You don't see people constantly replaying through the campaign at the same level of other highly revered games. And multiplayer isn't even considered.

I recently played it and it was good, the graphics are great, the gameplay is great, the story is good, for the time it was when it came out it was even better.
Another thing is that the game is demanding in terms of solving puzzles, it's not a game where you have weapons and shoot everywhere, like Serious Sam and the like.
Playing HL2 I got stuck in a lot of places and had to start over many times until I figured out what to do. Or watch YouTube for help. That end in episode 2 was really hard for me to get through. With those striders and water towers.
But I say this as someone who doesn't play new games, the last game I played was RDR2 on PC.I tried playing the newer Hitman a few years ago and it has absolutely no appeal or pleasure like when I played Hitman Blood Money or Silent Assassin 2, I guess because I'm old.

it ain't happening...not today...not in 2025...more copium...every year starting in October the HL leakers and podcasters go into a frenzy...I think Valve is just purposely messing with them- releasing false leaks and info to get them to bite and create hype

Half Life Legacy released

Relive Half-Life 1 with bug fixes, enhanced controller support, Steam Achievements, bunny-hopping, enhanced visuals, and more, in the ultimate restoration...it’s not an official release by Valve but rather created by a modding team by the name of The Phoenix Project Software...you’ll need to own a copy of Half-Life to play it...

it's that time of year again...HL3!

Geoff Keighley Once Again Teasing Half-Life 3 Announcement at Summer Game Fest

the new Steam Machine is rumored to launch very soon...on Keighley's Twitter page he teased at the reveal of Half-Life 3 as part of the Summer Game Fest, posting a photo of a steam, but he did not stop there

he also asked users to write games they would like to see at Summer Game Fest...Keighley mentions the word 'Hopium,' which has literally become a meme and an association with Half-Life 3 amid constant rumors about the game's announcement...perhaps this is really a hint at the long-awaited project reveal, or maybe the host just decided to troll

more Hopium!

the original Half-Life is currently on sale, at just 25% off its regular price...that's the smallest discount the game has received in the last 12 years...for comparison, in recent years, Valve typically reduced the price by 75–90%, and during the Spring Sale of 2026, the discount was 80%

against the backdrop of ongoing rumors about Half-Life 3 some fans have decided that this strange sale might be some kind of hint ahead of Summer Game Fest
