Is Deckard dead? Well after a second opinion, its condition was upgraded to... "Alive"

Well, since I started this thread, I guess we can all close it now. Steam Frame (code name Deckard) has been announced. Thanks, all, for a relatively active thread. Please drive thru.

Actually, it's been fun reading these posts as I'm not a VR guy, but I started this thread because I wanted to dive into VR. At the time I started this thread, I wasn't interested in anything Meta, and the others seemed too expensive, and "vendor lock" scared me. I would rather be "vendor locked" into the Valve ecosystem.

Thanks to all for a lively discussion on this message board.

Can the box also double as a physical Steam Link? I missed the boat on grabbing one when they existed and don't have a way to easily use the software version.

Would be cool if I could hop the data from my PC to this new Frame box thing, onto my TV.

Being a regular PC i am sure it would, steam link work quite well on a simple Amazon and other android stick so it must support Linux and I am sure steamOS (steam deck has it)

it will be available on you steam by default (steam come with it I think, you can see gamesyou have installed on a different machine and chose to play local or over the network)

I don't know why you are having so much problems with Wifi. If you are getting drop outs, there is an issue somewhere. The Quest 2 and Quest 3 have rock solid wireless. Tested 100's of them as part of my work. The problems have usually been interference(not so much a problem with 6Ghz) or router problems either placement issues or product issues. Like the TP link routers had a massive problem with dropouts when connecting to a headset. Some models still do. They will seem to work perfect then just drop out. Have you ever tried a dedicated Router for the Quest 3? People think you need something mad expensive. You don't, if you are using it as dedicated router.

The USB might work for you. In that it might solve the problem if your issues are router related. But at the end of the day, it's just a router in a USB stick. If interference is causing the problem, you might still have issues.

And apologies, just a bug bear with me with the new tech from Steam. It's not Foveated Rendering, it's Foveated Streaming. Foveated Rendering is a completely different thing :)

I too will be interested to see how it works when it's fully released. And like you, I haven't fully resigned myself to not getting one. Will wait for final reviews and price. But I am very disappointed at the moment.
I do have a TP-Link. It's an AXE75 / 5400, which has supposedly worked well for most people. 6 GHz mode works better than 5 in the same room (but also has intermittent dropouts), but it doesn't propagate into the adjacent living room well enough to make streaming usable. 5 GHz is usually "good enough," but sometimes has the dropouts and other times I have to drastically reduce the bandwidth. The Quest is the only device that's given me unsolvable wi-fi problems. Steam Link to the Apple TV also gave me fits, but I was eventually able to sort it out.

USB is an even worse can of worms. Meta's implementation is by far the worst I've ever seen in any USB-capable device. It locks you into their terrible Link / Oculus software, it refuses to connect randomly depending on its mood, the visual quality is garbage compared to Virtual Desktop's wireless connection despite the theoretical increases in bandwidth and stability, among many other problems with it. Totally unusable.

You know, the more I describe these issues, the more I think I will be in the market for a Steam Frame if the price is reasonable. I'm so tired of dealing with Meta's half-assed software. The only thing that keeps me hanging on is their generous referral system where I get $30 in store credit every time someone uses my code to activate a new device, and you can really stretch the store credit by waiting for deep sales. I've bought dozens of Quest games, and haven't actually paid for one with my own money in years.

If you already have a 6E (so 6ghz band) router, I doubt the Valve solution will be much better - it's still plain old Wifi :(

It sounds like you have heavy wireless interferences in your area, and I feel you, I have the same issue. Although it got better lately, probably new neighbours, but then I mostly do sims in VR for now so I'm sticking to wired.

I think the Steam Frame solution would probably fix it for him.

I had a cheap 6e router dedicated to VR streaming and it worked fine if I was within 15 feet but it would randomly have a lag spike every 15 minutes or so.

I bought an $800 high end mesh router and I can stream flawlessly anywhere in my 3000 square foot house, and it's not even dedicated to my VR.

What was your cheap 6e router? Most people recommended the Davolink minions Kevin router for a cheap 6ghz router.

A tp link, this was 5 years ago when 6e was new.
The more I think about the more the frame makes sense. For the average user setting up pcvr streaming with the quest is a pain in the ass. A 6 ghz router is still going to set everybody back atleast 120 dollars and you pretty much want to use the recommended devices from the virtual desktop discord and then you generally have to have some networking knowledge to be able to set it up and then configure the device.

Valve doesn’t leave any of that to chance by just including a 6ghz dongle that you just plug in and it works.

For people that know how to setup and configure their own router they can still do that if you play in a different room from your pc.

Yep. Full on wireless VR is a game changer.
Actually getting it to work well and the cost is the problem, and this is what they're solving with the Frame.

This is what I would recommend to everyone that wants to get into PCVR. If you're already into it you can mess around with other solutions, there are trade offs for everything.

I brought up wanting to possibly play pcvr in a different room from your pc… But what about the steam machine? It’s going to be cheaper than your 800 dollar router, and yeah, it won’t run Microsoft flight simulator or the cyberpunk 2077 vr mod well, but it will certainly run Alyx well and just about every other pcvr game on Steam out there. Most new games typically also see a quest release so you can be damn sure it will run on steam machine.

That thing is very portable too and of course has set hardware that devs can target for. Quick resume is also a thing with Steam OS that doesn’t exist with windows, so you should be able to quickly fire up a VR game.

Valve should definitely release some sort of bundle with the Steam machine, controller and Frame.

I actually went that route lol. Bonus, wife lifes minions so doesnt mind it sitting on the entertainment cabinet. works great for VR.

I have a ubiquiti dream machine router with built in wifi, what they call the base model. It's only got 5GHz. I was tempted to get a UI 6e or 7 router to add on, but much more expensive, and thought would maybe upgrade the router in a few years. Nothing else in the house needs 6Ghz or higher bandwidth. Anything that needs it is hard wired with gigabit ethernet. So the VR is the only thing on this minions router.

We love our u7 pro max if you have fiber > 1 gbps it's nice or if you like to move large amounts of data from servers to laptops in your home.

ever since upgrading to DD-WRT on my router and disabling wifi all together and installing router and modem fans and and setting up unifi APs and putting it all on a UPS, the network hasn't hiccuped except ISP outages and it's been years. pro network gear all the way, if on a budget give out handies behind your local walmart

Really enjoyed using my Valve Index back in the day and I'm excited for the Steam Frame. Only thing that I'm not too excited about is the LCD displays... I know microoled has it's pros and cons but from my experience with the Q3, I just can't stand dark scenes looking "gray".

Will have to wait for reviews on how the Frame performs. Hopefully we'll see these soon.

Deckard is dead.. releasing a headset with 2022 specs in 2026 is silly.

Starting to hear rumbling about the Steam Frame potentially being released in the very near future. Updates to the Qualcomm website regarding the Steam Frame, Unreal Engine baking in support for the Steam Frame, and data miners finding things such as info regarding Steam Frame bundles. It's possible we might see something soon, I hope.

Hmmm, sounds like it will sell out even before the reviews are done, unless Valve give reviewers an advance review headset before launch. Still no real specs other than a Snapdragon processor. Hoping it will have WiFi 7 capability, at least 90 fps, over 2000 pixels resolution.

Yikes, looks like a guy named Voodoo DE was showing his Steam Frame and Valve just smited him. Valve 'asked' him to remove his review and he did, but it looks like he was not supposed to do this.

AFAIK he did not sign any NDA's so this is all on Valve. It was magnanimous of him to comply with their request because he could have told Valve to pound sand.

But the person this dev kit belonged to, and how he acquired it could have come under pretty solid scrutiny. Just because he did not sign an NDA didn't mean he was safe from future relations with manufacturers or other vendors blacklisting him. Could he have told them to pound sand? Sure, but this was the smart move professionally and reputationally, not magnanimous.

At least the Steam Frame info is now on Valve. Very decent specs, love the streaming first mentality WiFi 7 but also includes a WiFi adaptor 6E so both are used at the same time solving any bandwidth issues. Of course, standalone as well. Pancake lenses, 72hz-144hz, does not appear to be OLED, too bad. No price, two versions, 256gb and 1TB. Check it out.
