Ahoy!

We're happy to share the Alpha test trailer for our pirate survival game Crosswind.

View: https://store.steampowered.com/app/3041230/Crosswind/

We've been working on this game for 2 years, and finally are ready to set sail with the first non-NDA playtest tomorrow. To celebrate this we've put together this gameplay trailer, shot fully in the Alpha build.

Crosswind is our dream pirate game. Heavily inspired by great titles like Valheim or Enshrouded, it also feautres naval combat similar to AC: Black Flag and soulslite bossfights. The upcoming Alpha is a big milestone -- with playtesters live feedback we will be able to thoroughly verify a lot of work and designs. It's not gonna be perfect, but we hope it will move in the right direction, and we are absolutely willing to complete this journey whatever it takes.

The Alpha will feature:

  1. Basic survival gameplay (building, crafting, upgrading);
  2. 3 unique biomes scattered across a big archipelago - each with unique resources, enemies and bosses;
  3. 3 playable ships and one NPC merchant (of course to plunder it!);
  4. Land combat, basic naval combat and early version of boarding actions;
  5. Very basic Tortuga social hub.
All in all we hope it will provide 30-40 hours of a survival adventure, but of course some parts of the game will be much less polished then others.

For those interested in playtesting: we start small, and have very limited server slots for the test, but for those willing to try the game -- the signups are open on Steam page. We will be gradually letting people in starting tomorrow; Steam picks people randomly. There will be other tests in the future, so even if you want to try Crosswind and don't make it in the first wave, you may get luckly later.

I will be happy to chat about Crosswind, if you have any questions. Thank you for your time! o7

Sounds pretty interesting, went ahead and requested access to the playtest.

Dev responded to some concerns about the survival-craft mechanics.

I appreciate your point, but, well, that's the kind of game we wanted to make, and we will do our best to do so. There are many genres, and hopefully, there is audience for each :)

That said, we will try to balance the survival crafting part so it does not make the adventure part look pale, for example, by offering some prefab buildings for those who don't want to spend too much time on that, or by allowing to automate resource gatheting via NPC workers. We understand a true pirate captain may not want to chop trees all the time!

Thank you for taking your time to share your impressions! o7

looks interesting minus the "souls" part, hopefully the "lite" part helps... i signed up for the test anyways.

Just started playing it again after beating the demo, they changed several things for the better. I got to the ship way faster than last time, and enjoyed it a lot more as a lot of the slog is now gone. Looking forward to the new areas when I get there.

Good to know. It looks good from what I've seen. I tried the beta demo and liked it well enough but wasn't into what was an obvious grind to spend more than 1-2 hours with it. I'm debating this and Soulmask at the moment.

its grindy. but since progress is tied into exploration it kinda doesnt feel grindy, if that makes sense?
gameplay loop is basically doing quests, upgrading your gear, getting to the boss of the area youve been in, then the next area opens up, new crafting recipes, new items, and repeat.

its great fun though, 25 hrs in so far.

Can you play co-op like Valheim, Icarus, etc where just you and your friend(s) are in a world by yourself?

Yes. I think it is only co-op or dedicated server. I don't think the dev's host any public servers.

just finished everything there is in this game (well except for all the building you can do)
took 45 hrs. time very well spent, very addicting and well done game

Some of my friends are into it, but I don't think its for me.

Not surprising, people have been begging for a proper open-world pirate game for... decades?

Ive really been enjoying this, looking forward to when they release more content.

I had kind of dismissed this game but my buddy convinced me to get it and its a total banger. I've sunk about 40 hours into it already, so much fun to play. A little buggy mainly in the controls response but its a great time.

It's fun if you turn enemy damage down to 25% and health to about 50% as for some reason I feel I'm playing a single player mmo

Even with upgraded gear at lvl 5 with most points put into hp....you still get about three-shotted by anything and have to whack on them for way to long at 100%

Stat points seem very weak I feel like they need to buff them per point or give us about 10 a lvl as one food buff gives me more hp then like 3 lvl of nothing but vit

Guns are cool but it doesn't seem like it lets you kill a enemy on opening shot seems to get them down to 1hp something with is kinda lame

I feel like we need a 1-2 NPC group to follow us on land like the ship boarding combat

Fast traveling from the ship should keep you on the ship not land and have to swim back to the boat.

Ship combat is good and feels balanced but I feel like the camera view needs work and I have a hard time hitting sometims because it's slightly hard to see. Would be nice if they let you use the third person camera to fire the cannons or had the crew fire or aim automatically

At sea I feel like the view distance should be further as it seems like ships spawn basically right on top of you in large numbers and you can't really sea islands to you are basic right next to them

Overall I give it a soild 6/10

Yeah I started messing with WindrosePlus on my server to see what were good numbers for solo to 2-3 players. The grind early on was getting to me in the demo and now in EA.

The grind feels kinda pointless as it feels like it takes forever to level up and when you do you put your stats points in and do like 10 damage more a hit and can't notice the 2-3 points into hp......then you eat some food that gives 4+levels of a stat and really feel like stats points are pointless

They really need to add NPC crew as the only combat that feels fun is ship combat and boarding.... The island combat vs 3-4 guys is always the same. Ues the muskt to kill one before it gets to you ues all your stamina to kill the next then run away till your stamina comes back then kill the next.
If you mess up and get hit once you get stunned locked and die.

That or I really suck at the combat as I find it frustrating how weak I feel vs everything and how fast i die.

Also for the love of God add a pause key. I've died more then a few times because I had to go take a piss and if the game crashes or you exit you lose the food buffs for some reason

If you're struggling you're doing combat wrong. You can't tank anything, dodging and blocking are far more important than getting hits in. I agree about the ship view though, it really needs to maintain the 3rd person camera for combat because its really hard to see where the cannons are going.

That is a bad game mechanic and not fun. It's not that it's struggling it's that they are to spongy and hit to hard and it stops being fun after a few 100 fights. I get it being hard at the start but gear upgrades and stat points don't make much difference. If I want to be a tanky guy and put points into hp I should be a lot more tanky after a few levels and better gear but I'm not. All it is now is shot one kill it and jump backwards get stamina back then kill the other one and repeat. To me anyway that is not fun I want to jump in and kill a group quickly and move on.

Something like kingdom come deliverance 2 where you have to time the block right and the enemies die as easy as you is fun and engaging and feels balanced..... putting plate armor in that game makes a massive difference....this one putting the plate set on is the same a pirate hat and shirt set...
