so my 5 1/2 year old drive, this one here https://www.amazon.com/dp/B085ZB51HW will not initialize in windows 10, my system went to do an update and it seemed to be taking a long time to reboot, when it did reboot the drive is gone, it gives me these errors, is this a software issue, i removed the update and even rolled back PC to a few weeks ago, i have same issue.

try a new cable and/or port. then if there is no data on it that you are worried about use diskpart to clean it and try again.

does it showing up in drive manager mean it at least powers up, i haven't opened case yet to investigate

4-5 years is the general point at which hard drives begin to fail from my experience. But drives can fail at any time without warning. Do you have a backup? You could try putting it in an external enclosure.

Install this and see if it gives any information about the drive: https://www.cleverfiles.com/data-recovery-software.html

i do have backups, 1 desktop external and 2 internal drives that i plug a dock ocationaly, plus i have backblaze if it synced up recently, but not sure how far back they go, i may lose a little music and some doggie pictures LOL

maybe i check to make sure the backups do work

I would definitely check your backups, but I'm happy to hear you even have a backup. Most people don't think about backups until it's too late.

diskdrill found nothing there at all, it asked me to reboot after installing, think that will change anything ?

thanks for the advice so far everyone :)

i learned a long time ago running raid-0 with IBM gpox-60 drives what can happen without backups, OMG those were the days

You have to reboot before using the app, yes. I was just curious if the app could see anything Windows couldn't.

i know everything is stupid expensive right now, but is this a good alternative for the ironwolf, its just a storage drive with music, pics, video ect......
i only really need about 10TB but 12 14 wouldn't hurt for future, but them prices......
The Gold is meant for heavy demanding server loads, so it's more reliable. The Black has a bit better performance. If you're just using it for media files, I would get the gold.

ordered a 10TB gold incase this drive for sure is tits up, thanks, will look more into the ironwolf soon i guess and see if the diskpart stuff does anything, AFTER i check backups

i guess and see if the diskpart stuff does anything,
diskpart isnt going to "see" anything. its going to completely blow away the formatting/tables/whatever so it acts like a brand new drive. it may help if it is just a corruption issue.

well i tried diskpart and did a clean command, but it didn't do anything as far as i can see. but now the dead drive is not even seen as disc 0 in either diskpart or disk mangament, it's like the driver disappeared, pretty sure it's dead for sure now.

i did get the WD gold installed and copied over my latest backup to it, so all is good.

thanks for the advice everyone

I would start here:

https://www.seagate.com/support/downloads/seatools/

I've used HDD regenerator (older versions) and Spinrite to get disks good enough to copy files off them.
If it's too far gone for either of those tools to work, then pro recovery is the next step if you really need the data.

Using either Spinrite or HDD regenerator, I always recommend putting that drive in a different machine that's decent (good PSU, mem/cpu STABLE).

I lost a LOT of 10TB Ironwolfs (from 2018 and 2019) that were installed in 8 bay QNAP NAS' and moved the remaining to a SuperMicro server with Areca hosts and extenders and none of the ones moved have died or set off SMART alerts due to increasing defective clusters. It's almost like that (QNAP) was eating drives. Then again, another loaded with Toshibas was fine.

For me Spinrite always have the last word on drive being dead or not. If Spinrite cannot detect/benchmark or start working on the drive, that's it. If initial work is complete, I let it run full R/W/Verify pass overnight.
