Netflix raises prices across all streaming plans

The streaming giant adjusted its pricing structure Thursday, with all subscription tiers rising at least $1.

The company’s ad-supported plan is now $8.99 a month, up from $7.99; the standard plan is now $19.99 a month, up from $17.99; and its premium plan is now $26.99, up from $24.99. Extra member pricing also increased, with ad-supported plans now costing $6.99 per additional non-household user, up from $5.99, and ad-free add-ons now costing $9.99, up from $8.99 each.

So they can keep buying the networks that won't give them their content :D
I downgraded 2 years ago from the Premium plan so all 1080 for me and really dont notice much difference anyways even on my Sony 4k TV.

I heard Netflix has a free option...

$6/mo for Mulvad and $6/mo for Plex keeps looking better and better.

Netflix died for me when they stopped shipping discs I couldn't rip to my server, that I had been doing since before they even had streaming. I remember getting the streaming for free as part of my disc plan @ $7.99 I think - and I also remember the Netflix plugin for Windows Media Center

Recently wanted to browse around Netflix to see if there was anything I wanted to watch - they don't even do free trials anymore lol

Shit, do they have anything worth pirating watching? I mean $26.99 for ad free 4K? They've jumped the shark. Guess 1st Quarter Earnings are coming up fast and they've panicked.

I remember when I dumped my netflix back in '10 and customer support told me "you'll be back". "not now" I replied.

Some high up execs are probably really angry they didn't have enough money to buy Warner Bros so now they're upping the price.

Netflix has effectively maxed out subscriber count so the only way to increase revenue and profits is a regular increase in price on subscriptions. There's a reason why the company stopped reporting subscriber numbers a while back.

It doesn't help that subs are the only way Netflix can make money since they won't give anything a theatrical run and rarely put out physical copies of their stuff for sale. The execs are leaving quite a bit of money on the table especially considering quite a few people sub, binge and cancel and the number of people who do that will only increase over time especially with continued price increases. The massive amount of money they've spent on "original" shows and movies also isn't sustainable and has to be recouped from somewhere.

Sure, Netflix has spent a ton of money making One Piece but at least you can see where the money went with the sets and good special effects. Can't say the same for many other projects. This is not a Netflix only problem. All the streaming services are having this and all the other issues. It just happens that Netflix is probably the only one that is profitable. There's a reason Disney bought out the rest of the Hulu and will be renaming it Disney+ later on. Disney+ was a massive money pit that has lost Disney billions of dollars. Buying Hulu and renaming it is the only way to save face and pretend that Disney+ was a success.

As a 55 year old Brit I love going through the "Whats New" and its masses of South Korean Teen romance. There is a lot of stuff on Netflix but it seems less and less is being made to entertain me. Stuff that does appeal goes downhill rapidly due to the 20 something writers thinking they know better than the original creator or gets cancelled after 1 season.

I would dump it today but other half would be very annoyed. Same for Spotify.

They can go after other alternative revenue choices, like merchandise from new shows they created that people like to watch. Netflix doesn't do good shows anymore, so it's mostly now slop.

I wish Netflix would do some blu-rays but they don't. I deleted my account months ago. Never going back.

Netflix shows are unwatchable. In every show they make the pace is bad, 2/3 of the season is filler and they never warp up any major plot points in a season. Then they cancel them.

A show about kids doing kid stuff becoming a show about young adults pretending to be kids while doing kid stuff in a single in-show year isn't jarring at all.

Just to exemplify your point, Netflix put Kpop Demon Hunters in theaters for just 5 days last year and it made $24 million. This was a movie that absolutely everyone had already seen for “free” (and watch as many times as they want) and they still were willing to pay to watch it yet again at the theater. K-pop Demon Hunter is also getting the rare Blu-ray release this year at some point and it will likely make a bunch of money. But as you said, this is very rare move for Netflix….they are leaving free money on the table. Young people are starting to realize they want physical goods like the old people used to get…some company is going to rich when they realize this.

Other than some stupid execs who have been in place for too long, I don't understand it either. Theater releases for good movies will not hurt streaming; in fact it will only help as word of mouth gets out there. Most people are more than happy to rewatch things they enjoy so seeing it in the theater for money and then watching it on their streaming service of choice afterwards will only help.

Netflix did something similar for Frankenstein so it could be considered at some awards shows. This was a good movie and likely would have made them quite a bit extra had they left it in the theaters for longer. I wasn't able to see it in the theater when it was in the theater for maybe a couple of days but it would have been a good movie to see in the theater.

The point is Netflix is sitting on multiple possible revenue streams and ignoring all but one of them because it's a tech only company. What seems pretty obvious to most people is completely lost on the people running the company. Remember, George Lucas didn't make all his money from the Star Wars movies. He made most of that money from the merchandising of the movies and the merchandise from the OT and the prequels is the only thing that makes money for Star Wars anymore. Next year it will have been 50 years since the original movie and the beginning of the merchandising and it still sells. Few things will have a hold like that and many won't be a success but even a single one should be worth the risk and that doesn't count all the smaller ones that hold for a year or five of great sales and then disappear.

Netflix good shows had ended around when Henry Cavill left Witcher. Henry Cavill is like a national treasure for nerds. Netflix also decided to rewrite history with their movies and documentaries, which pisses off people from those areas of the world. They can't possibly profit from things like merchandise because nothing they make is worth being a fan of.

That may be a good experiment for them. Let's say they release K-Pop Demon hunters in the theater and an average family pays $30-$50 for that.
Netflix gets half from the box office sales ($15-25).
That may be giving up a 1 month sub $9-$27. It also excludes the cost of distribution and marketing or the potential for the user to subscribe for more than 1 month.
May be unlikely that the theater makes them additional money.
However, they may make money on the Blu-Ray sales, in the long run.
