Nintendo Switch 2 arrives June 5th, 2025

He means it was a retailer sale, not an official manufacturer one where they reimbursed the vendors for the difference. There is a very distinct difference between those two types.
I don't care. It doesn't make a difference to the point being made which is that sales must be slow enough that a lower price was deemed to be required.

Um, no. Manufacturer lowering price could indicate slow sales at nintendo, retailers lowering price indicates that the switch 2 is a great product to try to line in customers with.

Edit: What retailers call a loss leader. There's more stuff to sell than consoles, after all.

I disagree. I hope you saw the other post with the video about Switch 2 sales.

If something is selling so well that it's out of stock, then why lower the price? What I think happened is that the PS5 discounts hurt Switch 2's sales. If you're shopping for a $450 to $500 console and see the PS5 cheaper and don't care about mobile gaming and Nintendo exclusives, then buying the PS5 makes more sense. Nintendo wasn't the cheapest game console during Black Friday.

Depending on your Internet and Wi-Fi speed you can remotely play the PS5 on the steam deck and other handhelds. chiaki-ng https://streetpea.github.io/chiaki-ng/

Ok, but why? Most games on the PS5 are available on Steam with the exception of Ghost of Yotei and Astro Bot. Playing PS5 games over WiFi kinda defeats the purpose of the Steam Deck. You can even play PS4 games on the Steam Deck through an emulator.

I'd say that's surprising, but not entirely so. The Mario Kart bundles tend to sell better, and this isn't.a widespread practice. One thing's for sure: this is definitely worth it if you want a Switch 2 right now and would rather roll the MKW money into a different game.

I checked several Microcenters and they all have this offer with many stores having stock
$449.99
Save an extra $50.00 with Member Pricing

With an additional $22.50 in savings if you use their MicroCenter credit card in store. The deal is now $2.50 better than before. They changed the deal. Pray they don't change it further.

I'm curious why MicroCenter of all places is doing this. My theory is that MicroCenter knows it's not synonymous with game consoles and is willing to take a hit on revenue to draw people in.

Probably a good method to have people sign up for their credit card (it's a popular item this holiday season). I almost grabbed one using my Walmart MC when Walmart was offering $100 CAD rewards dollar promo, but I was a day late. :-(

Seems that the switch 2 is now merely selling very well instead of fastest of all time:

A few weeks back, we covered news that the US suffered its worst November since 1995 in terms of console hardware sales. Well, as reported by The Game Business, the Switch 2 wasn't immune, with sales down by 35% in the US compared to what the original Switch delivered in the same period during 2017.

Seems to me that there was a big need-a-better-switch-effect in the initial sales numbers, which is now petering out.

Depends on where you're looking. In Japan they can't keep them on the selves, but it's also 1/4 cheaper than the rest of the world. Black Friday for the Switch 2 was the worst for Nintendo since 1995.

Wanted to revive this thread as Nintendo has shared its fiscal Q3 earnings (which includes year-to-date info).

The company has sold through 15 million Switch 2 units as of the end of December — that's complete sales to customers, not sell-in to retailers (17.37 million units). It's maintaining its forecast of 19 million sold-in systems by the end of its fiscal year, or the end of March.

In short: the Switch 2 met Nintendo's raised expectations. We'll see how the console fares this year, but to date it's not a flop.

Nintendo is reportedly cutting Switch 2 production this quarter as US demand dips.

I can see that. The software selection isn’t there yet to sustain demand off-peak. Let’s see how the year goes.
Also, we are realistically in a recession at this point, consumer spending is dropping. While shiny new toys are fun, it is one thing most people will cut if they've lost their job, or are nervous about losing it, or are getting hit by inflation.

Agreed — I thought about that later in the evening. There's a possibility that Nintendo could do everything right and still witness a sales drop simply because the economy makes any console a luxury.

Yep and lately they've been a luxury you don't need to upgrade as badly. I mean when you think about the NES to SNES that was just amazing at the difference. Way more colors, more sprites, worlds better sound, new graphics capabilities. It was totally different in the kinds of games it could do. A game designed for the SNES realistically couldn't be cut down to run on the NES. So that new experience was something you might badly want.

Modern consoles, it is a much more sedate upgrade. Yes the Switch 2 is much faster and better, but fundamentally it is still the same 3D tech. Many games you could do on the Switch 2 you could also do on the Switch 1 just with lesser graphics and indeed we see that being done. So while it is a nice upgrade, something people would enjoy, it isn't as necessary. Ya the new Metroid Prime is better on Switch 2 for sure, but you can still enjoy it on the Switch 1.

So combine that with a down economy and no surprise it'll sell less. Still sounds like it sold a ton though.

I mean normally when sales slow prices tend to drop, but oh ho ho not Nintendo, they'll keep prices where they are for the next 20 years if they have to.

Switch 2 was out and stores still selling Switch 1 at the original msrp, maybe they bundle something with it at most

I was wondering if this might happen, and it is: Nintendo is raising Switch 2 prices in North America and Europe on September 1st.

The hike isn't a huge one, from $450 to $500, and it's interesting that Nintendo is giving some regions a lot of lead time (the increases kick in much sooner in Japan). That suggests some of the impact from tariffs and component prices were baked in at launch, and it's still a better bargain than a PS5 or Xbox. But it does create a hurdle (if sometimes only mental) that didn't exist before.

I don't think consoles are dying, but they're in a very rough position for reasons we've discussed before. All tech is suffering, including PCs, but consoles are also luxury items. You'll probably need a PC for work, school, or just doing your taxes; you don't need to play Starfox on the couch.

They were selling S2 for less than the rest of the world so not surprising they rasing it there first.

That's a good point. And I can't help but think that the Starfox (sorry, Star Fox) remake premiere was partly timed to offset the blow. Get your Switch 2 now so you can play this hot 'new' game at the best possible price!

Walmart has been pricing their pre-orders for physical games at the same prices Nintendo announced a month ago when they announced digital prices for a copy of Yoshi. So for example, you can grab Star Fox for for $49.99 physically from Walmart. It looks like Amazon has been price matching as well.

I just wish more games would come out as a full game on the card instead of just a key card.

Same. I was able to hold off for years on getting a microSD for Switch since the game data was actually on the carts. Memory pricing has really deflated the fun in buying tech.
