“StravaLeaks”: the aircraft carrier “Charles-de-Gaulle” located in real time by “Le Monde” thanks to the sports application

As the French naval air group approaches Iran, “Le Monde” has identified a French military using the sports app in the middle of the Mediterranean. A security breach that has not been corrected despite our previous revelations.

A lap of the track and start again. On March 13, at 10:35 a.m., in the middle of the waves, Arthur (the first name has been changed), a young officer of the National Navy, jogs and turns in circles on the deck of the ship on which he works. To record his performance, just over 7 kilometers traveled in thirty-five minutes, he uses the smartwatch he wears on the wrist. The information collected in this way is found on the Internet.

Because Arthur has a profile on the sports application Strava, and he is “public”: anyone can consult it. The young man has just reported almost live the exact position in the Mediterranean Sea of the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle and his escort, northwest of Cyprus and a hundred kilometers from the Turkish coast, was able to see Le Monde.

I would have thought they'd have cracked down on that by now. They had a similar issue with their nuclear submarine personnel as you could track when they'd be rostered to work because of sports apps.

From talking with my active duty friends it seems like they do crack down on this stuff pretty hard on US ships. It doesn't surprise me at all that the French navy is way behind on these things. The Internet probably didn't even exist the last time this "naval air group" deployed on something other than a NATO exercise.

No disrespect to the US Navy - but the French navy has been in active combat fighting in Africa, and other places in the middle east just as frequently. This comment rings with arrogance. I'm quite sure that guys getting his ass dragged through all kinds of shit right now. Just like what would happen on a US Navy ship.

US sailors are too busy unclogging toilets to run on deck.

US soldiers were on the news back in 2018-2020 for using the apps on bases and ships. Two years ago Israeli soldiers were caught using apps and giving away their location. Dutch soldiers had their info leaked via Strava last year (although not as problematic as on a ship). It isn't uncommon. Acting like the French are somehow behind the times, or lax, is just silly. One guy fucked up. That doesn't indicate that there is some problem with the French Navy.
