Valve Steam Machine, SteamOS Desktop, Steam Frame VR and Steam Controller

available in the living room
steam local network streaming ability is not bad for this (they have their own app or a moonlight type alternative), if you have an badass PC in the house, make all games available in the living room. If the smarttv does not support it and no laptop around to do it, firestick type of device can do.

Really bad news. Steam machine is absolutely going to flop IMO. Thing is weaker than a base PS5 and it is going to cost more than it. Oh well. Unlucky.

I wouldn't say it would flop... I mean.. if it actually does get released and comes to market.. then yes.. it will probably flop because it will be priced too high..

I'd probably wager the odds that it actually gets released to market to be getting higher and higher with component scarcity, pricing, etc..

Yeah, but we are lacking controls there.

I did a screen cast from my PC to the living room TV with a NASCAR game because he is a fan, and I was trying to get him behind the wheel & all he had to say was "Good Race".

It's a lost cause here, but when I move out of here, I want the new Steam Machine, controllers & VR, etc.

Still haven't announced pricing.
Secondly what is the alternative going to be for a lot of gamers?
These are going to sell decently well as long as Valve keeps the price from getting too insane. 16gb of lower spec ram. I don't think it will be as hard to keep the costs down as people suspect. Sucks it will probably be more expensive then they intended still.

This, I am not sure why Valve would not be able to compete with the Dells/Hps/boutique PC gaming competition in price-performance, single SKUs, large proportion (all?) direct sales to consumer from their own store, best post-sales moneytisation of the bunch by far, they should be a price leader (or could be if they want) easily. And against the DIY scene that should be a gimmy for them.

16gb of lower spec ram.
Plus 8gig of low spec vram which make it a bit worse if they did not had those already stocked.. but even if those 2 part are 4x more expensive than before, still manageable for Valve, APU already all been made a while ago would be my guess (at least for the first first month of launch), they probably will go for very reasonable 5,000 mbs gen 4 type drives has well

I predict the "aftermarket" will explode with copycats.

Some rigs will be cheaper with lower spec parts to take advantage of the know-nothings OR the people who just want to play compatible games - like - if matches steam deck approved games it's OK with them.

Some rigs will be more expensive with MUCH BETTER parts for much higher prices.

That's the point - it is NOT the locked box like - PS - GB - NINTENDO.

I strongly disagree. As a very long-term, "hardcore" gamer, I will keep playing my hardcore games at my game desk & in my racing cockpit.

However, I would LOVE to have my 19-year Steam library available in the living room (even if my goal is to slowly brainwash my roommate into gaming).

I don't think I am an outlier.

I think most gamers will play new, demanding games at their most badass PC, but would still enjoy sharing older games with family / friends in the living room.

There are TONs of retro / abandonware / console emulators sold on Amazon.

the next xbox would do this

the hardware would be ready by end of this year

sadly the software is nowhere near ready
plus I don't think Microsoft has secured storage/memory for next xbox

What? The next xbox will allow me to play my 19-year Steam library in the living room?

yup

2 versions
  1. series s2 — basically a steam machine — but running windows. ps5 pro like performance for steam machine price
  2. series x2 — proper console. triple ps5 pro performance. priced around $1000. provision to play steam/epic games using dual boot
series s2 is just a PC with laptop apu — medusa mini halo aka medusa premium

series x2 is custom SoC solely for Microsoft — Magnus

Seems tricky for Valve given what they've said about their Steam Machine not being priced like subsidized consoles (including specifically saying $500 consoles). Many like what Valve have done with the ease of use of Steam Deck so I wonder if they're banking on having a market of fans of that seamless experience (given the memory cards between devices are swappable).

Under $500?

Just joking about people crying that the Steam Machine will cost more than $500.

EDIT: spoiler

The newest Xbox consoles (Xbox Series X and Series S) Xbox Series X at $599.99 (US).

The older Xbox Series S starts at $379.99 (US).
  • A high-end 2TB Galaxy Black Special Edition of the Series X is available for $729.99 (US).
PlayStation 5 also increased in price: the standard model is now $550
  • PS5 Pro is priced at $750 (US).
No official next-gen PlayStation console (PS6) has been announced yet.

For SOCs and MODT pcs, things are also a little different. The process for making an SOC is basically the same as a laptop, minus a bunch of parts and cost associated with them.

What
Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 its a 2023 phone chips, people playing in standalone mode will have really low expectation performance wise.

Oh

I still don't know if that's much better. The hardware on all of these just seems... not good.

I know they're aiming for reasonably priced, but it's at the point where I'm suspicious of it being a... tolerable experience moreso than good.
I imagine this is not for the hardcore gamer. Hardcore gamers either get a high spec prebuilt or they build it themselves. This seems to be more of a casual family device to lock them into the Steam environment. They will be able to play all games at least at 1080P, which puts them around PS4/Switch2 in performance. For everyone else we can roll our own Steam OS installations. What I really want is that controller.

The headset is built for wireless streaming from a high end PC. The ability to play standalone VR games and regular flat screen PC games with a virtual monitor is just a bonus you get with the hardware required for good streaming.

Purely wireless VR is the purpose of this headset. More powerful hardware in the headset means it's more bulky and power hungry which means less comfortable and less battery life. They're optimizing for wireless PC VR streaming so it would actually be worse for that.

I feel this is for the other member of the family of an ex-hardcore gamer ;) That end up used to play the indie title on the TV and stream from the main pc the big one...

Valve begs for help to find and buy RAM

View: https://bsky.app/profile/haydendingman.bsky.social/post/3mgql3dsbs22o

Valve explained during GDC that “If you have a line on a bunch of RAM, we are in the market and would like to buy it.”

Of course, this is said a little in jest during the event, but it still showcases just how desperate companies are for the component.

Valve trying to be cheap as always - why would I sell to them when they're gonna try to underbid what I could get for the RAM elsewhere?

There's always China's CXMT?

They probably quoted Valve 1 cent too much for their liking - this is the same Valve too cheap to increase server capacity/load, even just if for Steam sales every year - even with Steam going down the start of every sale twice a year for like over a decade now - even with how much money they bring in from Steam sales, or Steam normally. Meanwhile Gabe sits on a yacht that's in the pool of an even bigger yacht off the coast of New Zealand.

I can see it now why does this china memory module have these weird looking chips on it? And why is it sending data to this weird site?

I will probably try to get one controller early but not that hard. More interested in the Frame.
