It's finally happened: https://www.macrumors.com/2025/01/18/apple-removes-tiktok-from-app-store-in-us/

Apple tonight removed TikTok from the App Store in the U.S., meaning that the app can no longer be freshly installed on iPhones and iPads there. In other countries, the app remains available on the App Store and is fully functional.

iPhone and iPad users in the U.S. who already installed TikTok can no longer use the app either as of tonight, as TikTok has made the app "temporarily unavailable."

In the U.S., a law banning TikTok unless Chinese company ByteDance divests its ownership of the social media platform takes effect this Sunday, January 19. Lawmakers expressed concern that TikTok's ties to China pose national security risks.

TikTok is now showing the following notice to users who open the app in the country:

A law banning TikTok has been enacted in the U.S. Unfortunately, that means you can't use TikTok for now.

We are fortunate that President Trump has indicated that he will work with us on a solution to reinstate TikTok once he takes office. Please stay tuned!

U.S. President Joe Biden's administration on Friday said that due to the timing of the TikTok ban taking effect, actions to implement the law must fall to the next administration. U.S. President-elect Donald Trump will be sworn into office this Monday, January 20, and he reportedly might give TikTok a 90-day reprieve on the ban.

In a statement on Friday, TikTok warned that the app would become unavailable due to the Biden administration's lack of intervention:

The statements issued today by both the Biden White House and the Department of Justice have failed to provide the necessary clarity and assurance to the service providers that are integral to maintaining TikTok's availability to over 170 million Americans.

Unless the Biden Administration immediately provides a definitive statement to satisfy the most critical service providers assuring non-enforcement, unfortunately TikTok will be forced to go dark on January 19.

TikTok has followed through with making the app unavailable, and Apple has now taken action too. Apple could have faced fines amounting to billions of dollars had it still offered access to the app. This saga is far from over, though.

Cheers, the less social media the better off we all are.
Social media is ruining humanity. At least I'm old enough to remember what life was like before smart phones and all this other garbage. I call it The Before Time. It used to be a punishment for kids to tell them they can't go outside, because doing things outside was awesome. Now the punishment is not letting them stay inside. TikTok can be used for useful things, but clearly it's mostly caused brain rot, especially among our youth.

It's literally brain scrambling, voluntarily setting our phasers to stun and we overload ourselves with new ideas all day and never develop anything over time. People don't want to use time they only seem to want to pass it anymore.

This is not a situation where less social media is better. You don't want to know the reason they're taking down Tiktok.

I'm certain they're doing it for selfish nonsense reasons. TikTok is still poison, but the government is going to continue to allow every other flavor of poison imaginable. Many politicians are very much in bed with China. There's a lot of things we don't see.

I think they're legitimate in wanting to have the app not be controlled by a foreign leader like China. The trends in language are a symptom of the way to divulge information now, it is a huge problem, but I don't think that in any situation less social media isn't better. The differences between old and young people's mindsets are growing further and further apart, they grew up in two completely different worlds. Everywhere all at onceness is not a good thing without strict moderation. And anyone who isn't smart enough to just use a VPN to continue what they're doing deserves to have their life ruined by the app being disabled. I stopped talking to younger people once they started saying acronyms like "lol" in their normal speech to peers in person. There is a hugely serious problem with what the internet has done to people's mental state and unfortunately for them, the older folks have things right and actually keep the world in a more balanced, reasonable place.

I don't disagree. However, it's not up to the government to dictate which social media to feed us and which ones to ban.

I'm fine with whoever controls it. Information should be free (free as in freedom, not as in cost). If your main source of political news is TikTok, that's a personal problem. If it's data collection, etc., then there better be some HUGE changes in the US data collection, data leaks, data sales, etc.. All of our data has already been leaked in some very major and public breaches, from Experian to state governments to whoever else. Our own corporations and government gather more data on us than TikTok does.

I can go online and view ISIS material, Russian propaganda videos from Russia, Chinese news websites, download Anarchists Cookbook, etc.. But, TikTok? Nah, the US Government is going to dictate that one. A few years ago we were all up in arms about the "Great Firewall of China" and the Nanny State, and yet here we are doing the same thing.

Yes, China is an adversary. But, banning TikTok is just a joke and has nothing to do with any security concerns. Otherwise, we'd have a lot more things being banned; foreign and domestic.

China's tendency to control media makes TikTok a more direct threat than other countries. Sure, we of course have data collection happening pretty much everywhere, though I believe the trajectory of TikTok being a direct threat is how influential it is combined with the extent China will go to control their own population and us not wanting them to exert such an influence on such a grand source of information. I think that there's a bigger problem with the amount of people who do let TikTok and other such media streams be their main source of political news which also contributes to why our government would like it not under Chinese control. There are a lot of eggs in the TikTok basket so it makes it an easy thing to say, "hey, if we adjust this one thing we will have a lot less to worry about." I'm kind of disappointed that instead of just selling the company they are trying to say it's a violation of free speech, when there's an avenue to keep the platform open. They've got to be raking in unfathomable amounts of money already within every market except for the United States and could afford to just play ball. Either way, it's not good any way we look at it. People's privacy just doesn't really exist in an electronic environment and that should be a given. It's interesting to see how these sorts of things play out at a global scale and all the angles there are to try to define it.

Yay! Now do reddit and Facebook.
Facebook actually isn't awful if you use the Friends only feed. It doesn't endlessly scroll or suggest things to you and you can keep in contact with friends in a minimal, reasonable way. Otherwise their platform is completely terrible. And fuck reddit, that place is a cesspool unless my search results provide me with a direct link that has an answer from there that works for whatever I'm trying to solve.

I wish they ban TikTok in my country. It is ruining the kids. I tried banning it at the router level but couldn't. They have like zillion domains.

Not that it matters, but it is called RedNote.
Yeah, I forgot what it was called, but the app still came up when I typed it wrong. 😅

Facebook is still hot garbage with the Friends only feed. There is still an astronomical amount of ads. I have a browser extension that gets rid of all that nonsense, but unfortunately the mobile experience is still trash. I'm not even doing anything on there except seeing what friends and family are doing.

I think it's back now. The website works. I don't have the app so I have no idea if mobile works.

I personally hate all social media, but that's not enough reason to shut down TikTok. They didn't shut it down because China is influencing the youth, but because the youth all had the wrong think against a certain country that's starting wars lately. So another foreign country is upset that the US youth hate them right now, and want to stop the spread of "misinformation" by shutting down TikTok. I think we're angry at the wrong country right now. We use China as the new bad guy but China is far more humanistic in how they peddle for influence compared to USA. All TikTok did was allow people to share videos. If the videos are spreading misinformation which I don't doubt happens, then why aren't we shutting down Facebook and YouTube? In terms of Chinese controlled applications, there's far worse ones than TikTok.

Ah, I will get maybe one ad or two per scroll, not enough to discourage me from checking what people are sharing. I also try to log out whenever I'm done visiting Facebook as a deterrent to keep myself away from the addictive nature of the platform.

Apparently a lot of young people are migrating to the “RedNote” app, which is blatantly Chinese trash.
And if you say anything the CCP doesn't like, they'll ban the heck out of you, which is pretty funny.

Serious question, is TikTok anything more than people lip syncing to a song while "dancing" for all of 20 seconds?

Google searches regarding "how to" topics are more frequently returning TikTok video lately for me. More than YouTube for some topics. I was shocked when I noticed it, especially recipes for stuff I haven't made before. Gaming guides (Black Ops easter egg walkthroughs for me cuz I'm old and don't have much time to game anymore) are almost all on TT.

So what is it these days? Other than self absorbed "this is all about me" type of people?

It's mostly the lens through which much of the inside world perceives the outside, but then they also continually creep into new things you wouldn't expect. I had what felt like a boomer moment when a friend in ecommerce told me a year ago that a lot of storefronts on Amazon were migrating to Tiktok's marketplace because it's "gangbusters over there". One datapoint, but concerning.

reddit has become a source for actual information sharing. I use some of the content for work, gaming, privacy, etc. Cancel the reddit owners/moderators, maybe.
...but yes, nuke Fakebook.

Yup, I stick to what I need for Reddit in terms of information for work or something that is actually worth discussing.

This is the internet, a big game of whack-a-mole (or whack-a-rat for Sam and Max fans!)...
Whatever they kill, something else will pop up to replace and the sheep will flock to it like flies on roadkill.
Meta in general, needs to go bye-bye.
Everyone was so concerned about govt. spying 20 years ago yet these companies build huge empires in which their users voluntarily leak personal info every day.
I mean, imagine if the socials went dark and the so-called creators had to actually, you know, work for a living! ;-)

i only end up on reddit via posts from here or googling for solutions. only once have i found a solution though, and i registered just to thank the guy. its mostly a cesspool...

tiktok should die, its useless.

This is really not intended to be a political comment, just pointing out the obvious (I'm Canadian anyway), but TikTok is the most obvious Trojan Horse in the history of Trojan Horses. Anyone who thinks otherwise is painfully naïve. The American congress can't agree on the most mundane, inconsequential BS and will fight each other tooth and nail in a show of political theatre, and yet the TikTok ban received broadly bipartisan support after a security review and was upheld 9-0 by the US Supreme Court. The only thing that could bring it back at that point would be an executive order applied because someone's major campaign contributor is also a major investor in the platform which would be enough to change any politician's mind on it because their first priority is to themselves regardless of what they might say and....oh, well here we are.

From a business standpoint, considering the way China treats American companies that operate within their borders, they have no right to complain about a forced divestiture of TikTok assets, and the American government should be doing this to plug an obvious national security hole. In the meantime, you can't access Facebook or X in China, and yet China demands access to American markets and the Americans seem happy to give it to them despite the obvious security impacts and negative impact on the nation's youth. I find that extremely baffling.

And yes, Facebook, X, all of the social media platforms have destructive impacts on youth, but what they don't do is provide a foreign power with data collection capabilities within your own border. These are not the same, not even close.

Reddit is one of the worst echo chambers on the planet. As long as you stick to useful subreddits, then it’s pretty great.
