    How much for real-time transcoding?

it really depends on the quality of video you're transcoding to, but as vague reference point, my phenom 2 x4 820 server can take a 20mbit mpeg 2 transport stream (1440x1080i resolution, 30fps) and transcode it to 720p h264 in realtime at about 60% cpu usage. that's with VLC, i don't know how...

    E4600 C2D to E6700 P DC

if you're going to stay with S775, why not get a higher-end cpu? you can get a used e8400 for about $100 in the FS/FT forum for a little more than the cost of a new e6700, and it'd probably run a lot faster (triple the L2 cache). Other than that, there shouldn't be a downside to upgrading to the...

    Best processor for encoding?

depending on how well bulldozer CPUs perform, they may be worth waiting for, but that also depends on how threaded your work is. If you're using x264, that scales quite well up to 16 cores, last i heard. Right now i don't think you can beat the i7 2600k though.

Can 2 people work on 1 PC?

Thanks for taking the time to test this out, Emission. This thread had a lot of theory but not much evidence :) Shame that that particular software (BeTwin VS) requires two graphics cards, it reduces the convenience factor a bit. But it looks like it works really well. I'm tempted to buy a...

Can 2 people work on 1 PC?

you make a good point about background windows. But to counter this, i'd like to point out that i can run one copy of WoW on my main monitor (1680x1050 res) and one copy on my secondary monitor (1280x1024 res) with both copies running at 60fps. Each instance of the game uses about 1gb ram and...

Can 2 people work on 1 PC?

I don't know if you've tried running multiple games at once on a recent system, but my old Q6600 can handle 3 copies of WoW at once. I'm sure something more modern would be able to run 2 copies of anything at once, as long as settings aren't maxed.

    i5 750 STILL a bottleneck?!

perhaps the stuttering is being caused by loading. maybe you should try defragging or moving the game to a faster hdd.

two 3ghz cpus should be able to run any HD video fine, h.264 or otherwise. you might want to give coreavc a go, it costs $15 but you get lifetime updates, and it's the fastest software h.264/avc decoder out there. http://www.coreavc.com

thanks for the advice everyone. i've already moved the swap file to another HD, long time ago. i checked out the uninstallation backups folders, there was about 300mb of stuff there, same in some other folder i found with a similar name. There was also a full copy of sp2 in there, which was...

XP windows folder getting a little chubby?

Hey all, i'm having a bit of an issue with my windows Xp folder, hoping someone here knows more about this and can possibly help me out. On the home computer at our house (maintained by me) i have a 5gb partition set up on the main HD for the windows XP installation. this drive only has XP...

    User Interfaces

I've gotta say, i really don't like when programs "think" they know what i want and try to do it for me... i want to tell the computer what to do, not the other way round. So you could say that "intuitive" UI's are pretty annoying for me. but hey, other people like them... you may want to look...
