    Anybody booting from external drive?

Thanks for the reply. Don't get me wrong, I'm quite capable of opening up the iMac. I'm just not willing to because I don't want to void the warranty. I imagine that if something ever does go wrong, it will be pretty obvious that I opened it up. Also, as far as speed goes, I don't think I'm...

    Anybody booting from external drive?

I have a 2013 iMac that I wanted to upgrade to an SSD, but I am too nervous to crack it open and too cheap to pay somebody else to crack it open. So, I am booting it from a Samsung EVO SSD via USB 3. So far I am VERY pleased with the performance gains despite running a SSD over USB3 vs SATA...

Give me one reason why should I go for an MBP 15 retina

To me, the only reason to buy a MBP over any other notebook is for OSX. If I was in the market for a new computer and I only planned on using Windows, I definitely wouldn't go with an Apple product. Like what munkle said, it all depends on the software you are going to be using. If you want to...

Newbie to linux, suggestions for an old Netbook...

For a noob who seems more interested in first familiarizing yourself with linux and then learning more about it, I would suggest installing different distros as learn the system. Linux is somewhat complicated with a lot of differing opinions and straight up religious beliefs surrounding it. When...

ANDROID as OS for PC or notebooks ???

Yes, it is fully possible to run Android on a PC. As a matter of fact I have Android running on an old Toshiba netbook. There are some good things and some bad things with using it though. For one, it is quite nice to have an Android system running with a 500GB hard drive. There's plenty of room...

Best Power Options for simple file serving

Hi, I'm curious if anybody could share their recommended power options for running a small home file server. I'm using an old laptop computer with Windows 7 Home Premium installed on it. I plan on using it to stream movies to three PS3's and for an auto backup solution for my main desktop. Thanks

Can Dell's free windows 7 upgrade be used on another machine instead?

It will all depend on the type of disk they send you. If I remember correctly Dell tends to make their install disks work only with their motherboards. I once got a Vista upgrade disk from HP and it installed fine on a non HP computer. You'll just have to wait and see unfortunately.

Question for those who went from Vista to Windows 7

The only real difference I've noticed that on my 2 year old Toshiba notebook between the two is that Win7 wakes up from sleep quicker than Vista and connects to my router much quicker than Vista did. This does help me out a lot since I'm the type to close and open my notebook alot.

    New Computer Two Licenses

I recently bought a new computer for my home that had MS Vista Home Premium preinstalled on it. According to Magical Jelly Bean's Keyfinder the installed OS product key doesn't match the product key that is on the tag on the bottom of the notebook. Does this mean I could legally install Vista on...

    Excel help

I'm having an issue with a formula in excel. I have two columns, "Deposit" and "Cleared". I want to be able to calculate the total of each cell in the "Deposit" column if the "Cleared" cell has a "Y". I've tried messing around with the "if" function, but I keep getting errors. Thanks ahead of...

    Office 2003 Trial

Does anyone know where I can obtain the trial edition of Office 2003 Professional? I have the product key, but lost the install disk. I'm working on a limited budget and just don't want to fork over the extra cash to get 2007. Thanks

OS change from Microsft to linux.

That's so odd, because I have the exact same model of laptop and Ubuntu 6.10, 7.04, and 7.10 worked perfectly out of the box.

    Career Advice

The technical title of my current job is "Chemical, Biological, Radioactive, and Nuclear Operations Sergeant." Which means I work in operations. My section does all of the operational planning for the unit. Not very glamorous work. I have a lot of experience and schooling on topics for which I...

    Career Advice

I appreciate the responses, I'm especially going to take maw's advice in the matter. I am sort of a "guy who knows all about computers". I'm not likely to be able to transfer to a job working tech, the Army paid me a pretty big bonus to do what I do now. I guess I do have somewhat of a leg up...
