Some users have recently had their accounts hijacked. It seems that the now defunct EVGA forums might have compromised your password there and seems many are using the same PW here. We would suggest you UPDATE YOUR PASSWORD and TURN ON 2FA for your account here to further secure it. None of the compromised accounts had 2FA turned on.
Once you have enabled 2FA, your account will be updated soon to show a badge, letting other members know that you use 2FA to protect your account. This should be beneficial for everyone that uses FSFT.
Your assumptions are incorrect. I'm building the computer for my grandfather's newspaper in part for the fun and educational value of it, so yes, that's included in the price as he's well aware.
I purchased used PC 400 RAM out of a local bargain bin only two weeks ago, so I'm aware of the...
I did; you're right. I changed my mind last second. I'm going to use this as an opportunity to re-learn the basics of overclocking. When last I did so, it was done with jumpers on the motherboard and CPU's were rated in tens of megahertz.
You're right, though. I did it on a whim and should...
Had to push the build back a week. Hated to do so, but it was unavoidable.
Couldn't stand the budget. I had to break it. I called the owner and said, "I know I said $600, but I have my first draft and it's $800." Before I could even start trying to get more money, he said, "do it."
So, I did...
Greetings!
I've had a Samsung 840 Pro since they first hit the virtual shelves and love it. It was my first SSD.
However, I like what I read about the 840 Evo, which seems strange since the 840 Pro is more expensive.
I'm not concerned with differences in longevity. All SSD's will...
If I could get them to go another $60 or so, would you still recommend that same motherboard with maybe the Intel Core i5-4430 Haswell 3.0GHz LGA 1150 84W Quad-Core Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics BX80646I54430 at $189.99?
I probably can't get that much more out of them, though.
Cool. Well, that about wraps it up then!
Thanks again!
PS: One more question. Does the RAM's latency really effect performance much? Would lower latency be noticeable?
Okay.
Yeah, I know. I'm just saying that is a good thing. The other aspect I was considering was the fact that you mentioned the PSU is on the edge. One other upgrade I gave the old computer was a video card, just one I had laying around. Should we bump it up to a 500W just to be safe or no?
One very small consideration, very small, is the fact that this computer will no doubt be running like 10 years from now, so pumping massive amounts of fast RAM into it in the far-flung future is a real possibility. The computer I built way back just got an upgrade from 1 gig of RAM to 4 gigs...
That's getting pretty close to as far as I want to go. I told the owner of the newspaper, "I'll try to keep it under $600." So, it's a self-imposed budget. Like I said in my OP, it's a bit flexible. I like the Acer monitor. They aren't going to be able to tell the difference.
What about upping...
Ooo! I like the looks of that case a lot better! I wasn't digging the white. I like Corsair too.
Do you think that Acer display is the way to go over the Asus "B14z3" mentioned?
I like Asus. What do you think about their motherboards? Do you think we could manage a budget Asus board? I...
Okay.
Yep! :)
Yes. It's a WD Scorpio Black.
I saw that and had them e-mail me the price. I wonder how much slower it is than an Evo or a Pro? Probably doesn't matter since they are both SSD's.
Thanks again!
The SSD already sold. Just two hours!
SSD's make the computer so fast, though! I have a Samsung 840 Pro in my laptop. The difference is dramatic.
What if we did away with the optical drive and relied on USB and went with an even cheaper CPU (still Haswell)?
The users of the...
Motherboard chipsets — What ones are out and what should I consider? What are the pros and cons?
B75/B85 — Budget?
H77/H81/H87 — Mid-Range?
Z75/Z77/Z87 — Performance?
I think I have a solid state drive lined out for this computer from Craig's List, a Samsung 840 (don't...
