I use DVDShrink to rip to an ISO of the DVD (you can also rip the VOB files), then use Daemon Tool to mount the ISO image, finally watch the DVD on WinDVD (or your choice of DVD player).

I had this problem with videos that were encoded with the XviD codec, and the problem went away after I reinstalled the codec. So if you can figure out if one particular codec is causing the problem, and then reinstall that codec, all should work out.
