a circular polarizer is just a linear polarizer plus a quarter wave plate. ideally the linear polarizer lets through 50% of light, and the quarter wave plate doesn't absorb any of that. a 50% neutral density film should be better than a linear polarizer. but might be hard to find i guess? -

i'm not sure you get the point. a untreated glass air interface reflects about 4% of light intensity. (see e.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fresnel_equations#Normal_incidence) a good ar film or treatment bonded onto the glass can reduce that to 1%. (if not bonded, you create more interfaces... -

about this ar film stuff: i am of the opinion that a film/treatment/whatever that has high transmittance is not very useful. why? 1. in a dark room, there's no issue to begin with. 2. in a lit room, the diffuse reflections from the phosphor layer are way more annoying than the specular...
