Some users have recently had their accounts hijacked. It seems that the now defunct EVGA forums might have compromised your password there and seems many are using the same PW here. We would suggest you UPDATE YOUR PASSWORD and TURN ON 2FA for your account here to further secure it. None of the compromised accounts had 2FA turned on.
Once you have enabled 2FA, your account will be updated soon to show a badge, letting other members know that you use 2FA to protect your account. This should be beneficial for everyone that uses FSFT.
IOSafe has some products that might be up your alley. Granted, I get you already bought a fire safe, but at least with iosafe, they're designed to withstand fires and other types of disasters depending on the model. They also feature a data recovery warantee if all goes wrong.

I think you'll have more luck in the "Networking & Security" sub-forums. Plenty of people there have racks in their homes.
You can start off with the "Network pics" thread. Mostly of people's work, but there are some home setups there too. http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1275272
I'm confused as well ( admittedly not that experienced in the storage world ).
You're saying there is 1 SAS unit and both physical servers are connected to it by both a sas cable and network? What exactly is this SAS unit?
As with any block device, a block device can only be controlled...
I was going to suggest Vagrant coupled with Ansible/Puppet/Chef if he was doing web development in a *nix environment, but it's probably not worth the trouble setting it up for Windows ( don't have experience either, but doubt it will be as easy )
Sounds like you're happy with your setup. I'll...
Sync tools: Dropbox, SpiderOak (check the general mayhem thread for a referral), owncloud, bittorrent sync, etc.
I'm curious if there are web tools that will help with annotating pdfs. You would think evernote will, but it's not clear if it does.
Can you clarify this? "I'm running windows server 2012 R2 through fusion which is in turn running the dev environment through workstation. It's slow, but bearable."
My interpretation is that you're have a dev environment setup in Windows Server 2012 vm.
Everyone is going to have their own...
First off - I'm not a Windows guy.
What kind of development are you doing? Are you doing web or desktop apps?
Throwing bittorrent sync sync out there. It doesn't quite do block level sync, but will transfer 4MB chunks. See http://forum.bittorrent.com/topic/17782-bittorrent-sync-faq-unofficial/
Look for a service that lets you do transactional e-mail, which is classified as an e-mail that is based on a user's action and is directed towards a specific user vs. bulk mail which is used for marketing blasts.

I'm assuming you were planning to go with the free version of ESXi 5?
You have to be careful that the free version has a hard limit of 32gigs of RAM which means the hypervisor will not booth if more than 32 gigs is installed/enabled.
You can purchase the Essentials kit at $495 which I believe...
Yes, you can pull the drives and reuse in another machine. Even if you lose more hard drives than what's covered by the parity (ie. lose more than 1 HD in a raid 5 setup), you can still view the files on the good hard drives.
After some thinking, I see what you're trying to do.
You want to have ESXi be in control of the Areca. Have you checked if esxi supports it?
For your general shared storage, due to the 2TB limitations on vmdks, you wanted to create multiple 1TB vmdk files and combine them in Windows via...
I'm confused with your proposed storage setup.
1) Are you proposing an all-in-one setup, even though you're not keen on it?
2) If yes to (1), will the server be running ESXi and Windows running as your storage vm?
3) If yes to (2), you still need a disk to host the windows vm. Were you planning...
To add on to the conversation, I believe it is recommended not to specify the memory reservation as it will probably hurt than help. As you saw though, pass-through is a different animal.
For normal vms (ie. no pass-through) and no memory reservations, you should be able to start vms that...
I'm sure you found this out, but to my recollection, the only vm that I have that has a memory reservation is the one where I passed through my raid controller. I believe any vms that has something pass-through will auto set the memory reservation to the ram size of the vm.
Don't know...
