    Error 10004, its a.. port error or something, move if in wrong area.

    make sure to open the ports to your computer from the router if you are hosting. sounds more like a problem with the game than the connection.

    Windows XP Pro goes into shutdown immediately after boot

    check to make sure the video card drivers aren't corrupted. I once had a problem with this and reinstalling the drivers fixed it.

    If you do have a laptop, you can download that CMOSKILL.iso, im not sure where to download it, just google. I have it and it makes a bootable image that clears your cmos on boot. Very nifty.

    How to monitor network speed

    I run a 10/100 network, and AFAIK the difference in speed when upgrading to gigabit will be very small. Other limiting factors such as hard drive access time and such will bottleneck the system way before the connection speed does. Instead of wasting money on gigabit, why not upgrade your hard...

    Gaming Mice

    Never go wireless for gaming, the response time is much slower, and the batteries die. I have both wired and wireless mice, and wireless are great for anything BUT gaming. Also, one time my batteries died on me while sniping in Farcry. :(
