    This isn't entirely new. 5 or 10 years ago I remember seeing some company offering GPU-ish cards with m.2 slots onboard to give the cards additional storage that wasn't bottlenecked by overall system IO.

    That seems like a mistake to me. Intel's not in a good position for a massive multi-year R&D effort, even ignoring the risk of the current bubble popping in a few years and them entering the market just in time for the ram supercycle to enter it's oversupply and crashing prices phase.
