    Most of the heat come from the GPU anyway, I did the same with my 295GTX (cleaned the goo and applied Arctic Silver Ceramique and cleaned the solid carpet of dust between the fan and the fins of the heatsink) and the pads on the memory look the same and the temperature droped from 105c to 70-73...

    Enabled V-Sync in Portal and control lag like mad. FPS are good but half a second pass before the character run forward when I press the key. (yes tried with and without triple buffering)

    Install steam on SSD. Use SteamMover http://www.traynier.com/software/steammover to move games you use less often to your other drives. Problem solved.

    Onboard audio is enabled in the BIOS right? Also maybe the HDMI audio interface on the video card might disable the onboard audio maybe? You have a video card with no HDMI to try?
