This is a very interesting thread, and i'd just like to say well done on keeping it flame free :)
Have people considered that the ATi and nV cycles do not match up so one card is always going to be ahead at some point and then not later.

Have a look at the RAM Speed
Take the heatsink off and look at the chip
Use ATItool to underclock the card back down to pro levels 450/475 (?)
There might well be a part number on the card too
